The doctor looks his patient in the eye. Somber, he says, 'It's time to set your house in order.'
"When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost (John 19:26-30 KJV)."
Finished, what was finished? His excruciating pain? Confrontations with hypocritical religious leaders? Yes, they were finished but he spoke of his finished work for the Father. Jesus was the spotless sacrificial Lamb of God. Sinless, he shed his blood for you... for me. He secured our salvation.
"And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission (Hebrews 9:22 KJV)."
He shed his blood to defeat death and the devil.
"Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil (Hebrews 2:14 KJV)."
Without a doubt, it is finished!
