Isaiah had hinted at it in his Chapter 41,v.13 where God says, 'I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness." There is a picture of God holding one upright in frightening situation. But Isaiah goes even further a few verses later when God says, "I will hold you by your right hand." Now we have an enlarged picture of a father holding his child's hand and walking him or her through a trial. Parents take their children's hands in danger or to avoid danger like crossing a busy street. But sometimes parents hold their children's hands or grandparents hold their grandchildren's hands just because they enjoy the loving contact, and they know their children or grandchildren enjoy that affectionate touch too and the security it brings with it.
But notice also that it is the RIGHT hand that God holds. The right hand is the hand of strength since most people are right-handed. So when God is holding our hands in this way our natural strength is suspended, so that we are not counting and relying on it to accomplish anything, not even to hang onto God since it is not primarily our strength which enables us to hold on but it is God's unbreakable all powerful grip that keeps us joined to him as we yield and submit to it.
Some people may say mockingly, "Do I have to come to you and hold your little hand in this difficulty, and walk you through it?" But God's not like that. God enjoys holding our hands, because it's an opportunity to be next to us and walk with us in a special more intimate way. God knows too it's our opportunity to more greatly appreciate our nearness to Him.
