Our spiritual adversary and enemy is a kind of alchemist, only in reverse. An alchemist in medieval times was one who took something of relatively little or no physical value and turned it into something valuable like a precious metal. But what our enemy does is to take something of value and turn it into trash. Perhaps the appropriate term for that is "malchemy" and one who does that is "malchemist." For example, simply in shaping the way we think about an upcoming event, if we allow it, he can change a holy expectancy and enthusiasm into dread, or change what ought to be a healthy excitement into worry and nervous anxiety. But thankfully we can nip this destructive process in the bud and turn it around by giving thanks instead for the event as an upcoming opportunity and regarding it as a privilege, all the while paving the way for it in anticipatory prayer. In this way we reclaim the adventurous quality that a Christian life is meant to reflect.
