After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. Luke 10:1-2 NIV
The Lord knew that He would need help in preparing people in the villages and towns he would travel into. Actually, the Lord does not need our help, but rather desires for us to participate in the winning of souls to Him. The Good News of the coming of Jesus Christ needed to be spread.
Today the harvest is truly plentiful. There are several billion people inhabiting our planet. Each of these people have a soul, but, the soul is lost until it’s owner encounters and accepts Jesus Christ.
The number of Christians is unfortunately dwarfed by the entire world population.
The Lord wants us to pray for more workers to be sent out into the fields. But, Christ also wants us to pray for each other as His body, the body of Christ. So much work needs to be done for more souls to be saved, and each of us who follow Christ need the support and prayers of our fellow Christians. There truly is no such thing as an isolated Christian.
We are fortunate in the mass forms of communication available to us to spread the Good News. However, evil information is also available and much too often is accepted by many more than the real truth, the truth of Jesus Christ.
Let us not forget our responsibility to pray for our fellow Christians and to encourage them. We must all carry out the work of the Lord.
