but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die." Gen 2:17 ESV
she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Gen 3:6b ESV
Have you ever heard anyone claim: “If I had been in Adams situation, I would have never made the mistake Adam did?” Well the truth is, every person who has ever lived, has lived in the same exact situation as Adam. You are in it right now.
Adams sin was not eating from the wrong tree.
Adams sin was not obeying God’s warning, not believing God. His sin was unbelief.
In the entire Bible, not one person was declared righteous before (right with) God by living a sin free, or sin less than others, life. From the father of righteousness (Abraham) until this very day, the only way anyone was ever declared right with God, was when they believed God and God declared them righteous by faith.
And he (Abraham) believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness. Gen 15:6 ESV
It is very simple, those who believe God are righteous (right with God). Those who do not believe God are unrighteous and are still under condemnation for their sins.
This is why the Holy Spirit convict’s unbelievers of the sin of unbelief. In these next verses, Jesus explains to the disciples what the Holy Spirit will do when he comes.
And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: a) concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; b) concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. John 16:8-11 ESV
a) The Holy Spirit convicts of sin those who do not believe in Jesus.
b) He convict’s believers, not of their sins as some claim, he convicts believers of their righteousness, right standing with God.
c) He convicts Satan of judgment.
So when an unbeliever forever rejects the conviction of the Holy Spirit of Jesus identity and that they are sinners in need of a savior. They are calling the Holy Spirit a liar. They have blasphemed the Holy Spirit, the one unforgivable sin.
but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”— Mark 3:29 ESV
Can we tell if a person believes God?
Those who believed God obeyed God’s warning and fled to safety on the ark. Those who did not believe perished.
because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. 1 Peter 3:20 ESV
Those who believe God, obey the gospel and flee to safety by placing their faith and trust in Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Those who do not believe, perish.
So here we are, in the same position as the very first man and woman, Adam and Eve. Will you choose like they did not to believe God? Or will you refuse to make the same mistake and believe and be saved?
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Rom 10:9-13 ESV
