It always feels good to be home. We were exhausted as we pulled into the garage, but still filled with joy after being with our family over Christmas. Celebrations are wonderful! For four consecutive nights we were in different homes with family, along with some distance travel and everything else that we tend to add to our schedules to enjoy celebrating Christ’s birth with loved ones. Whew - I was ready for some quiet and rest! Perhaps some of you can relate. I unloaded a few items and took them inside and was just returning through the door that linked our laundry room to the garage where I met my husband. The moment Doug stepped through the door frame with his bag, we both suddenly stopped abruptly. What we heard was the faint sound of a trumpet blast that lasted a few seconds. We both were puzzled and looked at each other and asked the same question – what was that, did you hear it?
Early the next morning as I enjoyed some quiet, I thought about that trumpet sound and it’s timing. It seemed to welcome us as we walked into our home. It wasn’t really loud, but we both heard it with our ears. It caused us both to pause momentarily for we weren’t expecting it. The Holy Spirit led me to the following scriptures that morning as I read - wow, trumpet sounds.
1 Corinthians 15: 32 – In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.
Mark 13: 32-37 – But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come. It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. Therefore, stay awake – for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning – lest he come suddenly and find you asleep….
A couple of days later while I was getting ready for work I heard that sound – the trumpet again! I figured out where the source of the sound came from. After a little checking, it turned out to be a ringtone on my husband’s I-Pad. For those whom own cell phones, there is a ringtone called the ‘Sherwood Forest’. Doug and I didn’t have a clue for his I-pad is mostly used for games and doesn’t ring. However, it was buried in his bag when he had walked through the door upon arriving home and was sounding off some kind of alert – perfect timing as we walked into home! Of course we laughed about this and decided we weren’t crazy and our ears did work. I think I have a new ringtone to try - a great reminder that there will come a day..no more tears or pain and we will be reunited with those we love whom have gone home before us!
Prayer: Lord, we know you will return! We don’t know when, but the time will come and it says it will be suddenly….and yes, the trumpet will sound. As we all wait for and confidently expect you, help us to be strong and let our hearts take courage.
