" … he has promised, 'Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.' The words 'once more' indicate the removing of what can be shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain." Hebrews 12:26-27 NIV
We regularly hear about earthquakes and major weather events in various parts of the world. Our television screens show us huge cracks and crumbling mountain sides. Everywhere there is damage and destruction. Some days the world is physically shaken and seems to be coming apart at the seams. Other times our world is shaken socially, emotionally or spiritually and nothing feels safe.
Earlier in Hebrews we read, "In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end" (Hebrews 1:10-12).
Even the things God created aren't permanent. They can be taken away without notice, like old clothes that wear out and are thrown away. It's important that we don't get too attached to them.
These verses in Hebrews remind us of the importance of having our security in that which cannot be shaken. A crisis will reveal our where our security is placed. Is it in created things? Or is our security in our relationship with God who remains the same and whose years never end?
