I like the fact that there is always more to explore in life. There is so much to behold and experience and consider that a lifetime can only skim the surface (and the service.) Just when we may be thinking that we’ve seen it all, that we’ve squeezed the fruit nearly dry, a book appears with a fresh message, a composition we’ve never heard fills us with wonder, a prayerful journey takes a new turn, a refreshingly different way of going somewhere or doing something presents itself. This book, or tune, or alternative may have been around for a long time but now it surfaces for us in a meaningful and timely way that we sorely needed! It’s not necessarily new so much as it is new to us. It may even be someone or something we categorized earlier as having little to offer us. Maybe we assumed that because a certain person liked it certainly we wouldn’t. (Or we may have assumed because a certain person liked something we surely would too, and, in fact, it left us flat.) Sometimes there is a kind of snobbery we have to let go of to enter what becomes for us then new territory. The children of Israel had to be reminded that they had not yet possessed all the land that God had given them.
It’s amazing what can happen when we keep an open and alert mind, when we stay hungry so to speak, when we keep on seeking higher ground, continuing to pursue the precious prize of peace with ourselves, with others and with God, but probably not in that order.
