Encouragement
"Set me as a seal on your arm." Song of Solomon 8:6
We always count on those in whom we have the greatest trust. New born infants count on the mother to nurse and take care of them when they are completely helpless and unable to do anything on their own. Children count on their parents to provide for their needs until they are independent and on their feet. Students count on their teachers to train and educate them in the way they have to learn. Patients count on their doctors to treat them and cure their ailments.
Society itself counts on the company of others for their social well being and moral support. Lovers count on the love of their beloved to see them through and warm their hearts on a daily basis. The whole universe counts on the providence of God to live each day in faith and hope, handing over every moment to His mighty care to keep adding breaths to their life.
With the season of weddings flourishing at the moment, I was quite taken up by a few eye catching cliches and adages. At one wedding where I attended a few days ago, the flower girl walked before the bridal couple into the church holding a placard with the words; 'Last chance to run....'. The bridesmaid had another placard; "He stole my heart so I stole his last name.". The wedding card itself was inscribed with the beautiful words; "Today I married my best friend."
In the first ever bridal dance, the bride and groom were so engrossed in looking into each other's eyes that they almost forgot that there were wedding guests around them.
It brought back to my mind a time when I had announced a spot prize for the couple who had danced looking into each other's eyes at a show that I had hosted years ago.
Truly when two lovers look into the eyes of the other, at that moment nothing else exists around them. It is the most beautiful sight to be in where one counts on the heart of the other.
It is said in Romans 13:8; "Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law."
A pastor once stated that there were no marriages in heaven because there were no women in heaven. However a woman from the congregation not to be put down rose in defence of women and told the pastor that there were both men and women in heaven but no pastor in heaven to bless the marriage. The pastor knew he had been put in place by her reply.
We all know that Jesus himself stated that in heaven we will all be like angels when the crowd questioned him as to whose wife would a woman be at the resurrection as she had married seven brothers in her lifetime.
Earth is the place to live according to the flesh as in heaven we will live according to the spirit. Yet on earth itself some outstanding and true love stories of the heart where two lovers cannot be together far outdo the ones where people share a life with each other.
And even those who are apart are still sharing a life from afar with the other counting on each other's love to touch their hearts in a forever touch of the soul. Soulful love cannot be toppled over by any other form of love.
Still at other times, all love stories do not run the smooth course of happy endings. A singer once rose from nothing into a popular and sought after singer all due to the hard work and dedication of her lover who was already an established singer at that time.
But the man riding high on the wave of fame turns into an alcoholic and succumbs to his fate one sad day. The woman however to keep his famous name and his memory still alive continues to sign autographs with his name attached to her own. Very heart lifting!
In yet another incident, a terminally ill man who falls in love with his next door neighbour who recently moves in and too falls in love with him sadly knows that he has no future to offer her and does not want her to wallow in grief for him after he has gone. So with a strong heart he sets about to make arrangements for her happiness to live on a good life. He brings in the love of her best friend into the picture and makes sure that she too begins to see him in a different light by pointing out all the good qualities of her friend and how he could keep her happy always. He gets the two married in front of his eyes though his heart is at breaking point at the love and life that he could have shared with her if his health was rosy.
Such sad stories probably have a greater spark of love than the happily ever after ones.
In Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet their love did not end in marriage but their love was greater and the most iconic in the history of romantic love in the world. They could count on each other's love even in the darkness of death and in the radiant light of the after life.
In the movie Titanic, we see how fate cruelly separates two lovers but their love can still melt the iceberg in hearts today.
The Bible gives us some very worth thinking verses on how God will never let us down and we can count on His everlasting love.
Zephaniah 3:17; "The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing."
In Deuteronomy 7:9; "Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations."
Also in Hebrews 12:28-29; "Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; for our God is a consuming fire."
The most promising one is in Psalm 23:5-6; "You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever."
I used to have this gut feeling that in order not to dread tomorrow, maybe it was wiser to stay awake the whole night so that my today could safely continue into tomorrow. But I know that when I count on my God, He will keep presenting me with even better tomorrows than the present todays.
When we were small we were asked to count sheep if we could not sleep at night or count the stars. But when we count on His love, we need not count any other numbers. Just as people have targets to achieve in life be it in a business deal or sales and marketing to sell their products, we too have a target to achieve on earth to live life according to his will counting on his wisdom until we count the stairs on the staircase to heaven.
The two greatest love pledges that can ever be there are, "You can count on me" and " You count the most to me."
