In His answer to a question posed by of one of His followers, He said
something that no doubt caused them to rethink their definition of
greatness and how to achieve it: “So anyone who becomes as humble as
this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven” (Matthew 18:4
NLT). One could never imagine that would be the answer He would give.
Who is the greatest in God’s kingdom? Those who change their thinking
and become like little children. This is a principle embedded in Jesus’
teachings, which we must follow to enter God’s kingdom.
Naturally, little children depend on their parents or responsible individuals
to provide proper care and nourishment for them. They can’t provide it for
themselves. In the same way, we must learn to totally rely on our heavenly
Father to provide all that we need. This comes through our belief, trust and
obedience to Jesus Christ. We should not worry about the food we will eat
or the clothes that we will wear.
It is recorded in the Gospels that on two separate occasions, Jesus fed the
multitudes and that the leftovers collected after everyone had their fill were
more than the original amount. Jesus also said that Solomon was not
clothed as wonderfully as the flowers of the field, which are here today and
gone tomorrow. The essential point is that a child’s trust and humility
enable him or her to believe and not worry about his or her needs. Our
heavenly Father loves us so much; He will provide all we need. We must
focus on God’s kingdom and how our lives can be devoted to its coming.
