I pressed my head against the window and stared into the fresh morning, sun rising in hues of pink over silent water. Living here on the bay offers so much feasting for the eyes it makes the heart go still.
This morning, though, it comes alive.
Yesterday I sat on the shores of the lake watching the boys play with their Daddy while I read Staci Eldridge's best seller for women, Captivating. I closed the pages understanding just a bit more of my own heart.
She says we want to be fought for, rescued, be loved so passionately that, like Cora in The Last of the Mohicans, we have a hero whispering in our ear No matter how long it takes, no matter how hard it is, I will come for you.
Cora's hero did. Nathaniel ran right into gun powder and flashing blades, defying death as he rescued his love. We watch it, and it makes our hearts stop, or throb, or beat slow in realization of this hero and rescue thing, this thing of being the beauty in crisis and all of earth stopping in someone's heart until we're found, safe, and loved.
I guess this is why I love when my husband walks into the bedroom where I lay sick on the bed, and pulls out one chocolate bar after another with a sheepish grin. I know he dislikes shopping and he's pushed for time, but he brings what I need, and he brings not one, but seven. Or when I'm cold and he wraps his great big arms around me, runs home, and returns with blankets and coats for all of us.
There may be no French and Indians to keep at bay in our world, but just the same, he fights for me. And as I stare into the sunrise with my heart lifted up, I know that Christ is all of that, too.
He came for me, He pursued me, He faced the powers of darkness and hell so I could be rescued. The world stopped and went black when He gave His life for me. Then, because He didn't want me to be alone, He rose again and gave me His Spirit while He goes to be with His Father. He's preparing a place for me, there, and will come again for me.
He didn't just defy glistening blades and deafening gun powder, He defied the very powers that have broken the hearts of women ever since the serpent deceived our sister Eve in the garden. There is so much more for Him to conquer than for any other hero, and His victory is certain.
In fact, He's already won it, and you have only to receive His relentless, passionate love.
He's strong, He's able, and He wants to be the one to fight so you don't have to. This is why He says our strength lies in confidence and quietness. Why He asks us to stand still so we can see the salvation of the Lord. Why He says that faith, not striving, is the shield that will ward off every single dart of the enemy.
He's our Hero. The greatest One we will ever know. His love makes the heart stop, beat fresh, and then come alive.
Fellow sisters, women, girls who long to be pursued and fought for, today may you realize that the most valiant Hero ever named fights for you and is not content until you are resting in His bosom. You may meet Him, trust Him, and allow your heart to go still in realization that you are the beauty in a story greater than any you could read of, and Christ is your relentless pursuer Who won't be satisfied until He has you.
Allow yourself to sink into this, and your heart will go still, then come alive.
