The next day after church, Emmy and Ashlyn changed their clothes and went outside to draw on the sidewalk, while Rick and Mari went into their bedroom and changed their clothes as well. Rick and Mari sat down on their bed. "Gosh, I can't believe what a big speech I need to make in two days," Rick sighed. "I have never been much of an eloquent speaker. Most of the time I get tongue-tied."
Mari smiled at him and held his hand. "Don't worry, darling. You were great when you gave Joe's eulogy. Just speak the way you spoke when you gave that speech."
Rick sighed again. "You know, Mari, I still remember when we first started working at the lab as just co-workers and good friends. Never in all that time did I imagine we would one day be married, and we would be sitting in my room on my bed...so close..." Rick's voice faded, because then Mari kissed him on the lips and murmured, "Mmm." She and Rick continued to kiss and to hold each other for the next half hour.
During that time Ashlyn and Emmy came in from drawing on the sidewalk. They went up to their bedroom to play on their computer, but then Ashlyn froze in the hallway near their parents' room. "Emmy, did you hear that?" she whispered.
Emmy shook her head. "What?" she whispered back.
"Listen. It's coming from Daddy and your mommy's room," Ashlyn whispered. The two girls put their ears against the door and heard Mari groaning and Rick breathing heavily, as if he were running. As the sounds got louder, Emmy whispered, "Do you think someone is in there attacking them?"
Ashlyn shook her head. "I didn't see anybody come in," she replied. Suddenly, her face turned pale. "Unless, of course, they came in through the back door!" she exclaimed. "Emmy, we need to go and call the police!" she screamed.
Rick and Mari heard Ashlyn screaming, and they put bathrobes on and hurried to the door. When Mari opened it, she bent down and asked, "Ashlyn, Emmy, what's wrong? Why do you need to call the police?"
"You mean, you guys aren't hurt, Mommy?" Emmy asked.
"No, sweetheart. Wherever did you get that idea?" Mari asked, stroking her daughter's cheek.
"We heard you guys making a lot of noise in here and thought someone had broken in!" Ashlyn cried. "What were you guys DOING in there??!"
Rick and Mari looked at each other and laughed a little. They led their daughters back into the room. Rick took Ashlyn onto his lap, and Mari took Emmy onto her lap.
"Sweetheart, this is not an easy thing for daddies to talk about with their daughters," Rick said as he gave Ashlyn a hug. "You see, Emmy's mommy and I...we...well, we were doing something that God wanted us to wait for until we were married."
"He wanted you to make a lot of weird noise until you were married?" Ashlyn asked, confused.
"No, Ashlyn," Mari said. "You see, when a man and a woman get married, they want to spend time together like your daddy and I were doing, and, well..."
Rick and Mari were both clearly uneasy, but they did explain how sexual intercourse is done and that God designed sexual intercourse to be between a man and a woman who are married to each other only as a way for them to strengthen their bond. "This bond is so special and so personal that God only wants a man and a woman who are married to each other to do it, because it unites them as one. Jesus said when two people get married, they are no longer two but one flesh. Sexual intercourse is a symbol of that. It is a good thing, but it does hurt a little when it's being done, so that's why we were making weird noises," they explained.
"Why do you do it when it hurts?" Emmy wanted to know.
"Not only that, but when you describe how it's done, it sounds so GROSS!" Ashlyn made a face. "Why would God want you to do something so...EWWWW!"
"Well, like we said, honey, it symbolizes the unity between a husband and wife," Rick laughed. "And that's how babies are made. That's how you and Emmy were made."
Rick and Mari explained about the sperm and the egg, and Ashlyn and Emmy were much more relaxed than they were when they first came back into the house.
