Thirty minutes after Rick and Emmy hung up the phone, Mari woke up from her nap. "Mommy, Ashlyn's daddy just called. I told him you were asleep," Emmy told her.
"What did he want?" Mari asked as she yawned and stretched a little. "He has a job for you. He told me to tell you," Emmy answered.
"A job?" Mari repeated, surprised.
"Yes," Emmy said. "He didn't tell me what kind of job he had for you, but he told me he had a job for you."
"I'd better call him and see what he means. This is wonderful!" Mari excitedly pulled Emmy onto her lap and hugged her, then reached for the phone and dialed Rick's number.
Rick was busy rummaging through closets, cabinets, and drawers looking for materials to build more inventions. When he saw he was out of materials, he sighed impatiently. He heard his phone ring. "Hello?" he said when he picked up the receiver.
"Rick, it's Mari. Emmy told me you had a job for me," Rick said.
"I do. I have a job for all of us. God has answered my prayers and told me I would find work, and then Ashlyn suggested I make more of my inventions and sell them so I can have money to pay back a loan. You know how the banks were worried about us not having jobs. Ashlyn suggested we sell them from our house and that you guys come over and help sell them."
"Oh, Rick, I would love to!" Mari cried happily. "And your machines are so good, I bet we would make just the right amount of money selling them!"
"Thanks," Rick said. "I have just rummaged through everything, and I am out of the materials I need. We should all go out tomorrow and buy more. Would you guys like to join us?"
"We sure would!" Mari agreed. "We'll go together to pick the girls up from school tomorrow and then go out and look."
"Great," Rick said. Then he looked at his watch. "Wow, it's almost Ashlyn's bedtime, and she was upstairs taking a bath. I'd better make sure she's done and has her PJ's on so I can tuck her in and read her a story from the new Bible you and Emmy got her. Once again, thank you so much for that."
"You're welcome. I need to get Emmy to bed, too, so good night, then."
"Good night, baby."
The next day at the science lab, when the lab closed at five, Joe Dollar locked up, as he always did, and headed off to the parking structure where he always parked his Mercedes Benz. As he was going, a gang of five six-foot men pounced out. "Give me your wallet!" one man roared.
"And your car keys!" added another, a menacing look in his eye.
"Forget it!" Joe yelled, trying to dodge them. The gang, in a rage, drew their knives and stabbed Joe in the head, chest, and back over and over until he was lying on the ground in a pool of blood!
