A few days ago as I read John 14, I discovered that 21 of the 31 verses in the chapter contained promises made by Jesus. In fact, the total number of promises I found exceeded 40 with a few of them repeating themselves.
The promises of God in these chapters are certainly more than enough to excite and motivate every believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. What makes it even more intriguing is the fact that the person making the promises, Jesus, is infallible and has a perfect track record. Therefore, we know that every one of His promises will be fulfilled.
Before Jesus revealed the promises within this chapter, He had to calm the chaos that was created on the inside of the disciples as a result of His revelations to them. He had just finished having His last meal with them. During that time He:
1) Washed their feet—setting an example for them.
2) Gave them a new commandment to “Love one another just as I have loved you.”
3) Told them that one of them would betray Him.
4) Told them that where He was going they could not come,
5) Revealed that Peter would deny the Lord three times before the rooster crowed.
The disciples must have been very confused, and disheartened. They had spent three years living with the Lord, had seen the many wonderful deeds He had performed and had heard the life-giving words He had spoken. The Lord knew their thoughts. The first verse of this chapter reads “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me” (John 14:1). Jesus knew the disciples believed in the Father. He was telling them to continue trusting in Him and what He told them. This verse prepares the way for the many promises He makes to the disciples and to all believers in the remaining verses of this chapter.
The first two promises Jesus makes within this chapter are found in verse 2, which says “My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?” (John 14:2). Some Bibles use the word “mansion,” rather than room. The fact that there are many rooms should not be taken to mean that there is a wide diversity within these rooms, but rather, that there are enough rooms in heaven to provide dwelling places for all believers. Jesus also states that He is going to prepare a place for us. There are preparations which the Lord must make in order to have a room ready for the believer. This verse does not say that each believer will have his or her own room but the room he or she has will be perfect for each person. It is perfect because heaven is perfect. Isn’t it wonderful to know that Jesus will actually prepare a place for us in heaven?
Similarly, in verse 3, we also find two promises from Jesus. He states “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am” (John 14:3). There is no uncertainty in the promise that the Lord made concerning His preparation of a special place for the believer. However, there is a time span between the preparation of the place and the Lord’s return to take the believer with Him. The Lord’s return to take the believer can be interpreted as being collective or individual. The believer’s soul can be taken to heaven individually, yet, the collective resurrection of believers from the graves on the judgment day will result in the receiving of our heavenly bodies. There are different points of view on these matters. But, my heart and soul find so much comfort in knowing that the Lord is going to return to take the believers after all the preparations are done. The Lord also promises us in this verse that when He returns for us, we will be with Him. We will be reunited with our Lord and Savior! We will be where He is.
In verse 4, Jesus gives the disciples some insight into where He was going. He said: “You know the way to the place where I am going" (John 14:4). The disciples had been given the means to know the way to where Jesus was going, to heaven and to the Father. Two verses later Jesus makes it clear to them the way. In verse 6 He declares, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). Amazingly, this short verse holds within it four promises. First, Jesus is the way. He is the way to the heavenly Father. He is the mediator between mankind and God the Father. Jesus is the way to eternal life. Jesus is the way to true life. Jesus is the way to the kingdom of heaven. Secondly, Jesus is the truth. There is so much evil, deceit, and lies in our world. If we wish to have a truth that stands without any doubt, then, we need to look no further than to our Lord Jesus Christ. All of Jesus’ doctrines are pure truth and nothing but the truth. There is nowhere else to find truth that is equal to what we can find in Jesus Christ. Third, Jesus is the life. Mankind searches for so many things in life: true meaning, purpose, peace, and more. The only one who can offer true life to us is Jesus Christ. If we seek to find life away from Him, we will not succeed. We will strive for earthly desires and treasures. These are treasures that cannot follow with us when our human bodies pass away. Instead, if we seek true life in Him, we will store up heavenly treasures, treasures which will accompany the believer into heaven. Lastly, Jesus promises that He is the only way to the Father. If we follow Jesus we are assured that we are led to our heavenly Father. We are on the path that leads to Him!
