DAY FORTY
JEZEBEL:
Her successes
“Notwithstanding, I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols. And I gave her space to repent of her fornication’s; and she repented not.” (Revelation 2:20, 21)
Most of the people tolerated these evil practices that were taking place. God uses the terms seduction and fornication to describe how He viewed their actions. To summarize the problem, the people in the church had allowed a controlling force to come into the fellowship. It has become an infesting influence that no-one wanted to correct. The reference to Jezebel describes how God sees the problem. By allowing it to remain, the church has compromised its true purpose.
How did this happen? Satan’s workings are not always obvious while they are taking place. Like any sickness, it starts out small and if not treated in its earliest stages eventually becomes difficult to control or change. At first, everything appeared sound but very gradually teachings were introduced into the church and were accepted because they probably had Bible verses to support their teachings. As time progresses new members join the church with little Bible backgrounds and embrace these questionable teachings. Some of them become leaders in their church due to their education and business experience. It is difficult to change what takes place over a long period of time. If the church lacks a proper statement of faith to detect the error, compromise is possible. The faithful, who comprise the minority, have no influence to bring about the needed change. God has some serious words to the compromises. First, they shall share in her destruction. Second, God states that enough time has been given for her to change but His admonitions have been ignored. Maybe the faithful was treated as extremists or fanatics because they refused to accept compromise as the solution to the problem.
