Short Dramas and Plays
A dialogue between a professing Christian (P) and his conscience (C)
C: So, how do you think you’re doing in your spiritual life?
P: I think I’m doing pretty well.
C: How so?
P: Well, I provide for my wife and kids, go to church every Sunday, I work hard at my job, try to be a good neighbor.
C: Is that all?
P: I also tithe my income, read my Bible, and pray...
C: I see, so most people would think you’re a good Christian man?
P: I think so.
C: Do you think you fall short?
P: Of course, I mean, no one can achieve perfection in this life, I know I still sin.
C: And how do you sin?
P: (a bit red in the face)- I get angry at my wife and kids when I’m under pressure and
Am impatient
C: Go on...
P: I am a little too demanding of other people and can be critical
C: Anything else?
P: Those are the ones I can think of now.
C: Do you lust after other women in your heart?
P: (Ashamed)- yes, but that’s a common struggle among men.
C: How do you think God sees that?
P: I’m sure He’s not happy about it, but He knows we have weaknesses
C: Jesus said, “Whoever lusts after a woman in his heart, has committed adultery.” So, if you lust after other women, what does that make you?
P: An adulterer, I guess.
C: And isn’t adultery, the breaking of God’s holy commandment?
P. Yes.
C: Let’s go back to your temper and outbursts of anger against your family members. Can I share with you a couple of verses on anger?
P: (Hesitant) Uh, sure, go ahead
C: Proverbs 29:22 says, “An angry man stirs up strife, and a furious man abounds in transgression” and Ecclesiastes 7:9 “Do not be quick in your spirit to be angry: for anger rests in the bosom of fools.” So, to have outbursts of anger against your family members makes you what, according to those verses?
P: (Ashamed) Foolish and abounding in sins. I guess I was raised in an angry home, and I’m under a lot of stress...
C: So, is that your excuse?
P: Well, I know it still doesn’t make it right.
C: You’re right, it doesn’t. Let’s go back to tithing your income. Now, you give 10% to your church, right?
P: Yes. I mean, not every Sunday, some weekends I’m out of town on vacations and other trips.
C: You are being honest and I’m glad you mentioned your vacations and trips.
P: I work hard, I think I am entitled to them! Is there something wrong with vacations?
C: No, but I notice you use the word, “entitled.” Do you think you deserve good things?
P: Yes, I do!
C: But doesn’t the Bible say, “God has punished us less than our iniquities deserve.”
P: Yes.
C: So, when you think about your sins before God, are you entitled to only good things?
P: Well, I guess not, but didn’t Jesus take rest at times?
C: Yes, He did, but you spend $10,000 a year on vacations- Is it possible that half of that money could have went to helping out poor, suffering Christians around the world and donated to mission work?
C: (head down)- Probably.
M: And did you really need to spend $30,000 on a new car?
P: But doesn’t God want good things for His children and for them to be happy? Doesn’t God want us to be prosperous???
C: Jesus said, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”
P: Ok! Ok already!
C: Does this offend you? Do you really want to follow Christ, as you claim?
P: I do want to follow Christ, but you’re making it seem like I don’t follow Christ.
C: You did say you’re a good neighbor also, right? Is it being a good neighbor when you make $100,000 a year, have $10,000 in your checking account and you know of a Christian family in which the husband lost his job and his wife stays at home, and you wouldn’t even give them $100 for groceries in their time of need? Is that following Christ?
P: (no answer)
C: And I also see that you like to ask questions about peoples’ lives, where they are going to live, how they will afford things, but you don’t actually bother to try to meet their needs...How many times have you actually asked how you can help them?
P: At least I ask questions... I am concerned! Some people don’t even bother to develop relationships with people.
C: What good is concern, when that’s as far as it goes? Did Jesus just feel concern inside or did He actually meet peoples’ needs? And let’s look at your relationships with other Christians. How much do you really know about the personal struggles and trials of those you associate with?
P: Now that I think about it, not that much.
C: So, isn’t it true that the relationships that you have are only skin-deep?
P: (Sighing) I guess so.
C: You say you read the Bible and pray, but isn’t it true that you read out of duty and your prayers are just to ask for blessings, health, and protection for you and your family?
P: Is there anything wrong with asking for those things?
C: No, but do you ever pray for the gospel to be spread, for the lost to be converted, for wayward Christians to be restored, for the church to be revived, strength to live a holy life, for your nation to be granted repentance, for God to change your heart?
P: I guess, not very often.
C: So is it safe to say, your prayers are usually self-centered?
P: (Head down) yea.
C: And when you hear about people who need prayer, do you ever bother to actually pray for them or do you just blow it off, since you really don’t have the time to be bothered with praying for others?
P: (No answer).
C: And why is it that you look down on Christians who are not living the American dream like you are?
P: What do you mean?
C: I mean when you make comments behind closed doors such as “I don’t think they are very wise with their money,” “They are probably not good tithers,” “Don’t they know how to save?” How quickly you have forgotten about the nice inheritance you received from your dead parents, how they lent you money to buy your $200,000 house, how others have helped you out along the way, how you can only see your wealth and status now, but forget how it was due partly to the generosity of others. And where did Jesus speak of the American dream? Didn’t you read James 2:5 which states, “Has not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he has promised to those who love him?”
P: (Tears rolling down cheeks) I don’t think I’m that good of a Christian after all.
C: The good news is that Christ came into the world to save sinners, yes, even sinful Christians such as yourself. God offers His forgiveness and grace to all those who come to Him with a repentant heart and ask for cleansing and restoration.
P: “Lord, I see how I have failed you in my words and actions, how I have sinned against You and against fellow believers. I am greedy, materialistic, lustful, angry, and proud. Change my heart and make me to be more like Jesus. Forgive me and cleanse me from my sins. Show me how to honor You with my words, my money, and my life.”
