The Altar Call
In Revelation 8: 3-4 the following are mentioned about the symbolic meaning of altars regarding prayers:
“Another angel, who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all the saints, on the golden altar before the throne. The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of the saints, went up before God from the angel’s hand.”
If I understand correctly every prayer prayed by God’s saints are being caught up in heaven as incense before the altar. Regardless of how we view the intercessor we must acknowledge the fact how important intercession is to God.
How does intercession differ from other forms of prayer?
- Intercession is more intense as the intercessor prays with the leading of the Holy Spirit just as the minister of the Word will minister to their congregation through the leading of the Holy Spirit.
It is not just a “by pass” prayer but an intense desire to stand in for that particular person or situation through the promptings of the Holy Spirit.
-Intercession involves much personal time in the presence of the Holy Spirit. This takes a lot of sacrifice as well as much as courage. For the intercessor must be a clean vessel and often the Heavenly Father prunes the intercessor through difficulties and trials.
-Intercession will asks of you obedience. Your “by pass” prayer normally is about yourselves or about asking God for small things. In intercession however as your faith grows the Spirit will lead you into asking God greater and bigger things.
The ultimate of such a prayer life is when God gives the intercessor instructions in conjunction with that prayer. As I stated in the point above it takes courage to be an intercessor and it takes courage to be obedient.
Therefore intercession takes a lot of commitment and courage that not many are called for.
Now that we have discussed the difference between “by pass” prayer and intercession we need now to determine for what the intercessor can and must pray for:
The answer is clear and simple: Everything
Paul wrote to Philippians:
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4: 6-7 NIV
Thus we can say that the intercessor takes everything to God, put it at His feet and keep on waiting at God’s feet until the answer to the prayer requests are granted. Here is the difficult part: The waiting
As I have said before not everyone is cut out to be an intercessor. Nearly at all times it takes years before intercessors receive answers on their prayers. Intercessors are not ‘let go’ people and will stuck to keep on trusting God for that certain prayer request. Even if the prayer request is granted after their deaths.
They are resilient and will keep on waiting. It is the intercessors in God’s kingdom that have patient personalities combine with a strong willed minds with the love for God and His people. They will rather spend time in God’s presence , pray , reaching out to God in prayers.
It is not the kingdom doers in God’s kingdom that has the most impact, it is the kingdom beings, for kingdom beings or intercessors has learnt that nothing can ever come successfully to pass unless God has put His blessing on it.
For sure kingdom doers brings dynamic to God’s kingdom but the dynamic will certainly die a quick death if the intercessors do not pray and keep “watch” over the doers through prayer.
So in order for God’s kingdom to be functioning at optimum level it is necessary that there be harmony between kingdom doers and kingdom beings. Only though this harmony can God’s kingdom grow to new heights in order to take in more territory.
