‘That slave, who knew what his master wanted, but did not prepare himself or do what was wanted, will receive a severe beating.’ Luke 12:47 (NRSV)
In this story the servant was given the responsibility of running his master’s house while he went away. However, the slave disregarded the master’s request by abusing his privileges and neglecting his duties. We are told he ‘began to beat the other slaves, men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk.’ The slave was given much, but his neglectful behavior meant he would receive a ‘severe beating.’
Imagine if we promise to house-sit while our friend goes on holidays; however, upon returning, finds we had not fulfilled our promise. Instead, we had eaten all the food, trashed the house, failed to feed the pets, allowed the pool to go moldy and never collected the mail. We had been given great responsibility, so much was required of us. The wise person would prepare themselves beforehand by planning what needed to be done with what had been entrusted to them, and then faithfully do it.
We have received the message of the Kingdom, and as a result, God requires much of us. We are to prepare ourselves, by asking how we are to respond to His message, and how we are to go about living out this in our lives. I wonder how well we are seeking first this Kingdom message and how we are practically living it out each day? What does that look like for you? Whoever has been entrusted with much, even more will be demanded. Let’s seek first His Kingdom and be ready for His return.
