Healing
Paul and Dina stayed in the garage a few more minutes. Paul was still on the stool, and Dina was still perched on his lap. They were both crying now. "Paul, you jerk!" Dina sobbed. "I can't believe you were actually going to drive over a cliff!" Then she looked into his eyes with a horrified expression on your face. "Oh, Paul, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to call you a jerk. I didn't mean it. Don't change your mind and go over that mountain," she said. "You're not a jerk."
"It's all right, little sister," Paul said as he continued to hug Dina. He gave her a kiss on the forehead and said, "You're right, I was a jerk to want to do that. I wasn't even thinking about you or anyone else I love and how it would make you feel. But I'm glad you came into the garage to talk me out of it. You're the best sister ever, and I love you so much." He gave her another kiss on the forehead. "After Bridget and I broke up and I thought Mom and Dad weren't listening, I felt like no one cared."
"Come on inside," Dina said. "We'll talk to Mom and Dad right now." She climbed off of Paul's lap and took his hand, and they went inside to talk to their parents. Once again, they found Samuel and Mallory discussing work and money. They were sitting at the dining room table.
Paul cleared his throat a few times. He was nervous. How could he tell his parents he was just about to commit suicide before Dina stopped him? "Mom, Dad, I need to talk to you guys. It's really important."
Mallory barely looked at her children. "Not now, honey. Your father and I are busy. Maybe later, okay?"
Even Dina had had enough of their parents being too busy. Before she could even think, she exploded. "You guys will listen to what Paul and I want to say right now!" she screamed.
Samuel and Mallory were shocked to hear their eleven-year-old daughter scream at them. She had never done that before. Their shock, however, quickly turned to anger. "Young lady, don't you ever raise your voice to us again!" Samuel scolded. "Who do you think you're talking to?"
"I'm sorry that I can't always worry about the tone of my voice!" Dina shouted. Her face was turning red with anger. "You didn't pay any attention to Paul when he tried to tell you how upset he was about Bridget! All you did was yell at him about his grades and performance on the track team when he needed somebody to listen! You're always too busy for him and for me, and tonight Paul was so sad that he almost took his car out to drive it over a cliff and kill himself!"
Samuel and Mallory couldn't believe what they were hearing. They didn't want to believe it. "Dina, I don't know what's gotten into you, but stop making up stories!" Mallory exclaimed.
Paul sighed. "She's not making this up, Mom and Dad. I really was going to do it until she came into the garage and stopped me."
Samuel and Mallory felt the blood drain from their faces. "What?" they asked.
"I was getting into my car and Dina was in there, crying. She insisted I'd have to take her with me if I was going to go through with it and told me how much I meant to her. I don't want to hurt her or you, so I'm not going to do it." Paul sighed. "I think we need to make some changes here, though. We both feel like you haven't been spending the time with us that you should have and we all need to talk to our pastor about these problems."
Samuel and Mallory were crying now. They ran to Paul and embraced him, profusely apologizing to him and Dina for neglecting them. They agreed that meeting the pastor for counseling was a great idea.
