Gen 2: 15 - The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.
The fad in the workplace nowadays is work-life balance. Survival is the name of the game and one has to exert all efforts not only to attain, but surpass targets and to tower above the rest. Work has become a rat race where everybody ended up looking like a rat. Hoarding and get-rich-quick mentality ushered everyone into the hospital where the piled riches are spent. Getting to the top became the main obsession, only to find up there is a solitary and lonely place. Most of us are confused and mixed-up with our priorities and caught up in the web of our own making. This is a sad reality where work has become toil and the workplace a hell dominated by evil bosses and populated with scheming and backstabbing co-workers.
Our paradigm is to work hard to have a good life, a lie most of us hold on to. The bible is clear in showing that living and working is one. God placed man in paradise to work and enjoy it. We can still enjoy work as God has designed it and not as a burden most people believe, if we appreciate the principles laid down by God in the Garden of Eden.
God placed us in our present position. This is the first principle and we have to thank Him for doing so. In Genesis 2:15 it says, “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it“. Whatever perception we have of our present situation, let us remember God willed it, has a plan for us and it is good.
The second principle is to take care of the position given to us. If we take good care of our position it will take care of us. We have to love our work and be content with it. If we are dissatisfied we may not experience what God has in store for us. If we envy others, it will lead to cravings and insatiable wants. The grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence.
The third principle is the presence of a helping environment. In Genesis 2:18 it says, “I will make a helper suitable for him.” We need help not because we are inadequate, but God has designed us to be working with others, not lone rangers with messianic complex. Helping each other makes the burden lighter. As we are being helped, we should also extend help to our co-workers. Working with others is a privilege, helping others is a virtue.
The fourth principle is to recognize that is God working with us. What an amazing idea! Co- working with God is shown in Genesis 2:19 where it says, “He brought them to the man to see what he would name them”. God is taking part in our work and we should allow Him. He sets the pacing of our work and guides us along the way just like what he did to Adam.
Finally, the last principle is rest. In Genesis 2:2 it says, “By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.” We rest not because we are tired but because a work has been finished. This is what most people forget. By resting we can reflect with what we have done and prepare for the next work. We also have some time to smell the flowers and enjoy the view.
Balance can only be attained if our work is aligned with God’s plan for us. Our workplace is a paradise.
