What a week it has been; enough drama to make a movie. Last Thursday, there were two, coast to coast, plane accidents with no fatal injuries. Each outcome caused me pause, "wow, they were so fortunate. It could have been worse." I believe the providence of God was at work.
The first accident was the Delta airliner that skidded off the runway at New York’s La Guardia airport. The nose of the plane crashed through a chain link fence, stopping only inches from plunging into the ocean. It was as dramatic as the final scenes of the movie, “Airport,” circa 1970, if you remember that movie.
One of the passengers on the Delta flight was interviewed saying, “It was a life-changing experience.” And, “You’re so unprepared for what happens.”
On the very same day, on the West Coast, a WW2 vintage, single-engine plane flown by actor, Harrison Ford, crash landed on a golf course near the Santa Monica airport. Thankfully, Harrison sustained no life-threatening injuries. His son later tweeted, “Dad is okay. Battered, but ok!”
Both of these tense incidences led me to think of the providential protection of God. Each plane crash could have been much worse, but they weren’t. There could have been deaths, but there wasn’t any. It wasn’t anyone’s time to leave this life. God doesn’t leave anything to chance.
I was wondering what the Bible said about God’s providential protection. Here are a few verses I found.
•The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made. Psalm 145:9
•Your righteousness is like the highest mountains; your justice is like the great deep. You, Lord, preserve both people and animals. Psalm 36:6
•He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. Colossians 1:17
We never know when our time is up in this existence, only God knows. His divine intervention in human affairs remains mysterious. We need to trust and have gratitude for his providence of protection. Our future is in God’s hands.
