UNLOCK THE DOORS OF COMPASSION!
And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi. And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months. And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river’s brink. And his sister stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him. And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river’s side; and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent her maid to fetch it. And when she had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews’ children. Exodus 2:1-6;
Compassion is sympathy, concern or pity that moves a man to offer unusual assistance, help, care and support to another. When a man comes in contact with compassion, he can receive favour he does not deserve and great things for which he is not qualified. When compassion is at work, death sentence can be overruled; letter of termination of employment can be replaced with that of promotion; avowed enemies can be converted to advocates, and a matter that has been considered closed against a man, can be reopened in his favour. Compassion appears to be a combination of mercy and favour which a man can receive from people only when God has divinely commanded it. Like grace, compassion takes its source first from the heart of God.
After delivery of Moses, the scripture makes us to understand that his mother succeeded in hiding him from the killers, but she could only do this for three months. At the end of three months, when it became clear that she would no longer be able to carry on with her own strength and wisdom, she simply handed over the situation to the Almighty God. She placed the baby in the open bank of the river, trusting the whole situation to the invisible hands of the Almighty God to save and preserve the baby’s life. It’s worth mentioning that until Moses’ mother realized that she on her own would not be able to handle the situation, the Almighty God did not step in. It must be emphasized that for as long as you try to fix things with your own wisdom and strength, God may not intervene or open the doors of divine favour or compassion to you. To get the doors of compassion opened to you, you must stop relying on your own wisdom and ability, you must place your total trust in God.
For compassion to flow through men towards you, the most critical factor is the God factor. Only God can open the doors of compassion to you. It is when God’s invisible hands have opened the doors, that men can have compassion or favour you. Some people are still ignorant of this fact and they usually try to seek favour from men leaving God out of the equation. Proverbs 21:1 says ‘The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will’. If the Almighty God does not direct the hearts of people to have compassion on you, there’s no way you can receive favour from them. For instance, no one could have ever predicted that Pharaoh’s daughter would spare the three-month old Moses when she found him lay helplessly in a colt by the river bank. In fact the expected thing for her to have done was to silently stifle life out of the little boy, because at that time, there was a death sentence already passed by her own father upon every Hebrew’s male child. Nevertheless, because God’s invisible hands were at work, the heart of Pharaoh’s daughter was moved to show compassion on Moses. Rather than killing the child Moses, she picked and raised him up for her own son right in the same palace where the death sentence on all Hebrew-born male children was passed; this obviously could have been no one but God alone!
It is also noteworthy that there was no attempt whatsoever by Moses’ mother (Jochebed) or his sister (Miriam) to hide the true identity of baby Moses in order to deceive passersby or create the impression that he was not a Hebrew. If you observe very well, you would discover that there was no form of deceit or cover-up in the whole episode that culminated in the compassion the little boy received from Pharaoh’s daughter, and this clearly shows that their total dependence was on God. It is unfortunate that many people (including believers) today are changing their true identities in an attempt to get help or favour from men. Many people lie about their state of origin, religions, age, marital status and so on, all because they are seeking employment, contracts, admission, positions etc. These people have failed to realize that God will never be a party to unrighteousness; if you put your hand in evil or any form of unrighteousness, all in search of assistance from men, God cannot open doors of divine favour to you.
Finally, to get the doors of compassion from God and men to open to you, you must also show mercy to others. 2Samuel 22:26 says ‘With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful, and with the upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright’. The scripture - Matthew 5:7 further says: ‘Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy’. If you’re the type that is so cruel and full of unforgiveness to the extent that you show no mercy or pity to others, it will be difficult for compassion to flow towards you from God or men. The law of harvest provides that you reap whatever you sow. From today, you can unlock the hearts of men and make compassion and favour flow to you if you also sow seeds of favour, mercy and compassion to others. With your trust totally placed on God, heaven will cause the hearts of men to favour you.
Shalom!
