“Now if we are children, then we are heirs – heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in His sufferings in order that we may also share in His glory.” (Rom. 8:17 NIV)
“If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” “So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are His child, God has made you also an heir.” (Gal. 3:29, 4:7 NIV)
As children of God, we belong to Him. We are advised not to go after worldly pleasures and riches. Indeed, we live in this world, but we are not of this world. The Bible teaches us to store riches in heaven and to focus on things above i.e. in heaven.
As of today the ‘prosperity gospel’ teaching has lured many to give priority to wealth. John 10:10, 2 Cor. 8:9, 3 John 2 and Psalm 34:10 are some verses which such preachers use to attract their listeners to acquiring wealth. But, as Sadhu Kochukunju Upadeshi sang, Jesus is our only wealth.
The above promise is for only those who treat worldly riches as of no importance. We only need some money to lead a quiet and happy life, but that does not mean that we should depend on it. Rather we should have a burning passion for reigning with Christ.
Because we all are used to the material things of this world and because life in heaven is so unfamiliar, it is so easily possible that our mind cannot touch what I mean to say. Even then, if we walk and talk with God continually, we can sense for ourselves that there is a joy, an experience of life, which is above the ordinary and which surpasses all the wealth and resources this world can offer. This life, which we are talking about is one which grows in fellowship with Christ.
Heirs of God! Co-heirs with Christ! Does not this tell us how rich you and I are! Next time, if you are caught in a financial crisis, do not run after worldly means to meet your need but instead trust in Jehovah-Jireh: The Lord Who provides. Those who are led and fed by God in this earthly journey are those who are the heirs!
Each day is a wonderful time to taste the blessings of our Lord! Why waste our eternity in exchange for temporary pleasures? Look up to Jesus, is not He all you need?
