It's been days since the sun came out. Wind and rain brought on by a monsoon trough hanging over Guam has brought miserable wetness into the house. The smell of mildew permeates the house seeping from the cuboards and couch, pouring out from open drawers and closets. Everything feels damp and sticky. There is a feeling that nothing will be clean and clear again. One can only stand so much of this greyness. And the flies! And ants! Even the insects are tired of the wetness outside and are trying to take over the house. I found a red ant's nest on the kitchen counter - eggs, babies, pupae and all, hiding under last night's dishes. Tempers in the house flair as no one can find clean clothes to wear and the oppressive heat and humidity weighs us down. My hair is limp and feels perpetually dirty, the perky haircut now nothing but a nusiance as stray damp hairs hang in my eyes. Will the sun ever come out? Will the house ever be dry and clean again?
It's amazing how patience wears thin in adverse conditions. How we so easily loose track of the good things in life, when circumstances drag us down. It is so hard to follow the advice of James 1:2-4 " My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials. knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have it's perfect work that you may be perfect and complete lacking nothing." But when I look back at this past week - at the trials I faced due to the weather, along with the trials there were joys. Unified effort in the family to solve the laundry dilema. Increase in rain meant more people discovered leaky roofs which just so happens to be my husband's new business - fixing leaky roofs! The weather opened up many doorways of job opportunities for us.
And now, the sun is coming out. And I discover, that though patience wore thin, I can look back on this week with a smile and a nod and a better understanding of how to deal with the next "storm" in life that may come along.
