Family
He spent many hours in this house and now it was his. He had bought it from his grandmother’s estate. It was small but he was single so it was just the right size for him. He loved the little cottage style house. It had so much of her in it. It was almost like part of her was still there. Though the years when he was growing up, he would visit her at least once a week. He loved coming to see her and listen to her talk with her thick German accent. She had lived in American for over fifty years but she still had her accent. They had many talks about life and she would always tell him that she was praying for him. In fact everyone in the family knew that is what she did. She prayed for all of them. She prayed through good times and bad. If you made a mistake or a bad decision she gave no reprimand. She would just tell you she was praying for you. And you knew she did. If things were going well for you she would praise God for you. Everyone in the family knew she was in charge of the family’s prayers.
She had lived a rich full life. She was only sick toward the very end and lived to be 89 years old. Still she was missed. She was the strong women that had held the family together through her simple but regular prayer life. The whole family knew it. Her prayers were already missed. It was comfortable to be in her house. It was still so full of her.
It was an odd thing about living in her house. He felt drawn to spend a lot of time in prayer. He would find himself in the room she always referred to as her prayer room and he would simply begin to pray. He prayed about his life. He prayed about decisions he needed to make. He prayed for his parents and his brothers and sisters. As he prayed he began to wonder if there was something more he should be doing with his life. He was born and raised a catholic and he began to wonder if the reason he never married was because he was suppose to become a priest and devote his whole life to praying for others. The only thing he was sure of was that he felt there was a calling for him, but what was it he was being called to do?
He determined to dig deeper into what God might be trying to tell him. He heard about a tour he could take to visit Rome. He knew the roots of his faith began in Rome. He thought that perhaps if he toured Rome he would find the answers he was looking for. In Rome he would be walking on the same ground that many biblical scholars had walked, surely that would bring him the answers he sought. There would even be an opportunity to listen to the Pope present a message. He knew he had to go on this trip. Something was leading him to go.
He arrived in Rome hoping to find the answers to the restlessness he felt inside himself. He walked along the streets of Rome. He visited many of the cathedrals and the museums. He did go and hear the Pope speak. It was a once in a life time experience, but still he yearned for the peace he sought. He believed there was a path he was suppose to take in his life and he struggled to find it. The answer could not be found in Rome. He left still searching.
It was on the plane coming back from his visit to Rome that it all came together for him. God wanted him to stay in his grandmother’s house. God wanted him to keep going to her prayer room. God wanted him to take over the task his Grandmother had done for over Sixty years of her life. God wanted him to be the one who continued to pray for the whole family just as his grandmother had done. He was to be the one who knew which kind of prayer needed to be prayed. He would be there in trouble and joy. He would be the prayer warrior his Grandmother had been. He had not only bought her house but also inherited her prayer room.
And so he began to pray in the little room called the prayer room just as his grandmother had done for so many years and peace came to him as he prayed.
