To live a blessed and useful life for the glory of God and to be helpful in human society is a very good thing to be desired. Denying our self-interests and sacrificing them for the good of others, may be even our enemies, is a value worth to be acknowledged and admired. But in this fast modernizing age, the root behaviours of humanity, of which two are humility and unselfishness, are rapidly changing to self-praise and self-focus. The reasons for this have to be put before our eyes so that we can be cautious in handling our character.
The basic or foundational reason for pride and selfishness is the lie of Satan who makes us believe that we can boast of our education, health, wealth etc. But how many of us take delight in uplifting others higher than us? This is a core-method of being a blessing. To be a servant is a state respectable before the truth of the Word of God. When we humble ourselves and seek the overall success of others more than us, it is our character which gets strengthened. Moreover, we bring glory and praise to God by reflecting Christ’s humility.
We need to re-examine our self-behaviour which is to be daily growing to the nature of Christ Himself. No other thing can bring glory to God, except by living as He exemplified, thus showing God’s nature to those who can learn from us. Our basic objective from this must not be to exalt our behaviour but the character of Christ.
We are receiving knowledge of the evil consequences this world is facing because of selfish people filled all around. Let us pray for such people to become humble. The easiest way to make this happen is by being humble ourselves and making all possible efforts to live a life of blessing to others. Let us not say, “Oh, these are the last days when such selfishness would happen and prevail.” The world is waiting to realize the true worth of life which Jesus spoke of in John 10:10. It has nothing to do with money and fame, but is a life which humbly brings glory to God, God and God alone. The meaning of life is hidden in Jesus Who said, “I am life.”
To be able to live such a life we need to progress in humility. Humility is nothing but admitting that we are mere humans who should glorify God and uplift others. The grace of God is in work with power to enable the desirous to be humble just as God wants them to be.
