Proverbs 16:11 - “Honest scales and balances are from the Lord.”
Ecclesiastes 13:8 - “There is a time for war and a time for peace.”
Reading Zephaniah in the Bible should honestly leave no questions with regard to how our Lord sees war and the ultimate need for it. No one wants war, and that certainly includes God, our Father. However, there is a time for war when and if necessary.
It seems the very people who complain and fight because they feel their ‘rights and freedoms’ have been infringed upon are the ones who protest and fail to support our government, our president and ultimately our troops. How painfully sad that our government, our president and our troops are putting their reputations and their very lives on the line for all of us to protect and preserve those same rights and freedoms. It is because of our leaders and troops, of the past and present, that we are able to live in this wonderful country and have what we have. Think about that. Our leaders have been forced to make hard decisions through the years that have unfortunately led to death and destruction. As a result however, we have freedoms, rights and privileges we would not have had otherwise. Is anyone happy about the death and destruction? Of course not! Was it necessary? Absolutely! The absolute truth about it all is we cannot have it both ways. I know I am presently thankful to the Lord that my first language is not German. It certainly could have been.
It pains and saddens me to hear people putting down our president and criticizing him for the wonderful job he has done. It saddens me further to see protestors and people questioning President Bush’s decisions after 9/11. Quite honestly, I would have preferred him to be even more aggressive than he has been. Simple facts are, I am expected to have faith in the man God has given us to lead our country. I have to trust God and therefore the man he has sent to us to make these decisions. Everyone needs to remember who is really running this country, and who is really making all the decisions. How often people forget or simply choose to ignore.
Sin is the ultimate cause of war and killing, and God certainly does not desire either. However, the Bible very definitely affirms that war can be justified, understanding that there are reasons and circumstances that must be taken into consideration when making such a decision. God’s Word shows us His justice means protecting the rights of the innocent AND punishing those who deserve it because of their sins causing them to break the laws and violate the rights of others. Our leaders have a job to do in that they must promote, preserve, protect and enforce justice. Part of that job means taking action when that justice is threatened. Enforcing justice sometimes means having to make decisions that are not always desirable to everyone. One part of being a good leader is to understand that you simply cannot make all of the people happy all of the time. It is simply not possible. A good leader gains all the knowledge available to him at the time, considers all his options and makes his best decision based on the information in front of him. President Bush has made it very clear that he seeks God’s guidance when making his decisions. This is something I am personally very thankful for, and I am confident President Bush knows who is running this country through him.
Every time someone criticizes President Bush or any of our country’s leaders, they show their lack of true support for our troops in foreign lands living to protect us all. Criticizing our leaders and troops is ultimately disrespectful to our Lord. Our brave military men and women would certainly never disrespect their Lord, their leaders or their country. They are proud to be Americans who love, honor and respect all God has provided for us, good and bad. Trusting God does not always mean things will be good all of the time. God never makes us this promise. There may be things they do not like or may disagree with, but they would never be disrespectful or disloyal to this country or the men and women who live to lead it, and especially to the God who so graciously provided us with all these blessings.
This country was founded on the Word of God and His laws. There is not anything that cannot be traced back to biblical principles, no matter how far distanced it seems to be from it now. This is how we know, there is a time for war...
