Short Stories
TJ woke up early and ran to the window to see what the weather was doing. He was hoping for a bright sunny day because his father had promised to take him to the river to go fishing if there was no rain. Oh no thought TJ, it is raining outside and now I will not get to go fishing. He sadly walked downstairs and his father asked “what is wrong TJ, why the sad face”. “Because it is raining and I wanted to go fishing with you dad” said TJ. His father thought for a moment and said to TJ, “if you will smile and make your face a happy place, then maybe, just maybe the rain will stop and the sun will shine through the clouds and we can still go fishing”. TJ paused for a moment and thought about what his father had said. He really wanted to go to the river to fish so he decided to try hard to smile even it he didn’t really feel like it right then. And so it was that TJ went to the mirror and looked to see what his face was doing. No smile yet, this is tough he thought. He tried even harder to make his face smile but it only got worse, he scrunched it up and then he scrunched it down and he pushed his finger under his lips to make them turn into a smile, but nothing worked. TJ was frantic to make his face smile so the rain would go away so he ran to his mother in the kitchen to ask her advice on smiling. After all thought TJ, his mother was always smiling so she must know how to do it. As he bounded into the kitchen his mother instantly knew something was wrong. Mothers just always seem to know these things. TJ sat at the table and asked his mother, “How do you make your face smile?” His mother smiled sweetly at TJ and he shouted, “that’s it mom, just like that.” She sat down next to him and put her arm around his shoulder as she told him the secret to smiles. “Smiles” said his mother, “start first in our hearts. Unless your heart is happy first your face will not remember how to smile. Remember the best thing that has ever happened to you and then try to smile again and see if that works”. He excitedly ran upstairs to the mirror again and closed his eyes and tried hard to remember something extra special. His mind wandered thru the past as he tried to get his smile working again. He thought of the first time he saw his puppy bingo. Suddenly, as he played with bingo in his thoughts his mouth started to wiggle. It only wiggled a tiny bit at first but as he kept thinking so hard about playing in the yard with his puppy his mouth started to tremble, and then it started to wiggle and tremble even more. He noticed that he no longer felt so sad about the weather and instead he felt warm inside thinking of bingo and the red ball they played with together. They rolled in the soft green grass while listening to the birds in the tall oak tree singing so loudly. As TJ opened his eyes just a tiny bit to see what was happening he got a wonderful surprise. Just as his mother had told him, his face had a big beautiful smile all over it. He ran to the window to look outside and wow, the rain had gone. He raced downstairs to thank his mother for the special way she had taught him to smile and then ran to find his father. He found his dad in the garage putting all the things they would need at the river that day into the boat already hooked up to the car. “How did you know the rain would go away and we could still go to the river to fish” asked TJ. His father grinned as he told him that there is a smile in everyone’s heart if we just take the time to find it and let it shine and make our face a happy place. I knew you would find your smile today said his father, I never had a doubt. TJ and his father were both smiling as they drove toward the river to go fishing and even though they did not know it at the time, TJ’s mother was smiling bigger than both of them together.
