Miracle Stories
I knew I was in big trouble before the large tree ever hit me. I saw the trunk of it above my head so far from where it should have been and I remembered that I had always stressed to the men who worked with me that if a falling tree touches you it will either kill you or at the very least remove the part of you that it touches. This was supposed to be the last tree cut that day and it turned out to be my last big tree ever. My day had started as most others had, I got dressed, had breakfast and headed out to work. I was operating a small tree cutting business removing unwanted pine trees from near peoples homes. A recent hurricane had felled many trees onto so many dwellings that many folks were afraid to have these giants to near their houses anymore. This tree appeared no different from any other and it fell exactly where I had planned it to fall. But to my horror as this tree hit the ground it bounced back into the air with amazing speed it swung right at me. The massive trunk hit me right at the belt line and swept my feet under it before striking another tree and settling to the ground with me beneath it. I immediately realized I was trapped and could not move from the waist down. I knew I only had one good breath left in me and I used it to scream as loud as I could manage to alert the members of my crew working nearby. How could I have let this happen? How could I have made such a stupid and costly mistake? I was so angry at myself and could not sit up because the tree had pinned my legs and the thought that it had crushed my pelvis terrified me. There was no pain at first, just a feeling of unbearable pressure I will never forget. I looked around me to see where my life was going to end and struggled to think of what I would say to Jesus when I arrived to meet him face to face. I wondered how I would explain my actions and the choices I had made while living on this earth. As strange as it seems now I felt a wonderful calm come over me as I thought of Jesus’ saving grace and that even if I did not survive this accident I would be taken care of. I desperately wanted to live but I knew at that point that I had lost all control over what would happen to me from then on. My lead man Anthony arrived immediately with help though he later told me they never heard my scream above the noise of the equipment. Somehow he just had the feeling something was wrong and thank God they came to check on me. We were all very frightened but remained calm and I maintained consciousness just long enough to explain how to remove the section of trunk that was crushing me. What had started as a feeling of pressure was now terrible pain and I prayed as they worked quickly that I would be allowed to live and would not be paralyzed from the waist down but before they had the trunk removed completely I blacked out. We had no way of knowing it at the time, but removing the weight of the tree from my legs before the ambulance had arrived almost killed me. The blood from my body rushed to the crushed leg and caused it to swell to enormous proportions leaving precious little blood for my heart to pump to the rest of my body. I drifted in and out of consciousness as we waited for the ambulance to arrive and it seemed to take forever. There was enormous confusion as to our location and the emergency operator had no way to know where to send help and by the time they did know the closest paramedics had already been dispatched to another call. Forty five minutes passed as we all waited and it seemed like a lifetime to me lying there on my back unable to move. When the ambulance crew finally arrived they did everything to stabilize me but they had never dealt with such a severe crushing injury as this. I felt so very cold as if my life was quickly draining away and it was a very scary feeling. I remember as they cut my shoes from my feet that I looked down and could just barely move one of my toes, I was so relieved thinking I would not be paralyzed if I survived because I could still move that one tiny toe. Time was moving so slow for me and yet so fast for those around me trying to save my life. I was in tremendous pain when we arrived at the emergency room after what seemed like a very bumpy ride, but strangely calm as I knew that I was in God’s hands now and it all depended on Him, win or lose. I looked into the face of the doctors and nurses as I was wheeled into the trauma unit and I knew I was in very grave condition. My right leg was badly crushed and broken above the knee and my pelvis had been fractured as well as my left leg and ankle. I was swollen, battered and fighting to stay alive and they were doing their best to help me. I silently prayed for them as they feverishly worked to save my life and legs. I recall one of the doctors asking me if I could breathe, I realized then that I could not draw a breath to answer him and I have never felt as helpless as at that very moment. I passed out and for three days no one but God knew if I would live or die. When I did wake up I became aware that I was in the intensive care ward and my family was gathered near me. I was so afraid to look or feel to see if my legs were still there but overjoyed to know that I was alive. Those talented doctors were able to save my legs through the grace of God even though the blood supply had been almost completely severed below my waist for almost one hour. I was not paralyzed and can even walk again. I know now that I was not heading in the direction that God had planned for my life and this accident has helped me change my life for the better. I am reminded as I take each step of God’s enduring love and no longer take simple things like the ability to walk for granted. I never thought as I got dressed that morning that every piece of clothing I put on would be cut from my body before the end of the day by strangers, never to be worn again. I no longer cut trees for a living and now spend my time recuperating and trying to make the world a better place for us all. Thank you God for giving me another chance at life.
