WHAT WOULD I SAY NOW...?
(one-hundred percent)
It takes a lot of growing up to realize that not all gain is good, not all endeavors are beneficial, and not all victories mean progress. At the risk of sounding negative, some of the things we succeed in are a waste of time. This sounds negative because we've been taught that failure of any kind is unacceptable, leading us to base our adequacy as human beings on how many victories we have under our belts. You would be hard pressed to find someone that's not trying to be a superstar in everything they participate in.
A few years back, I taught about giving our 100% to everything we do. But as I've grown, I've discovered that a lot of things we participate in are simply for vanity sake, serving no purpose other than to polish our image and stroke our ego. We just like the idea of people thinking highly of us in this area. The issue here is that these endeavors, regardless of how dead-end they are, require us to draw from our arsenal; whether it's time, money, emotions, or energy. If we live a lifestyle of continuously embarking on dead-end vanity projects, we'll spend a tremendous amount of ourselves and make little to no progress in furthering our lives. Therefore, when it's time to make a move that actually counts, we're exhausted.
I would tell you not to spend excess energy on things that have little to do with where your life is headed. Time is too precious, and cannot be redeemed. It is too valuable to exert a lot of effort climbing a mountain that nothing is at the top of. Many times, it's best to allow people to feel how they wish to feel about you in areas that have no bearing on where your life is going. Yes, when you do exert effort, give 100% of your capability; however, know what deserves effort and what doesn't.
-DIRECTION-
This lesson missed the true issue in question. We are not stuck because we don't exert enough effort, we are stuck because we don't exert enough effort in a single direction. This does not mean trying your hardest to break down a particular door in a situation, but it means putting 100% of your judgment into a single goal or accomplishment. Our mental block seems to be the fact that we withhold portions of our judgment and focus for side missions. When this happens, everything gets jumbled together and situations become cloudy. For example, a person wants to find his or her soul mate, but the other half of this person's reasoning and judgment is devoted to casual sexual encounters. This person seeks out opportunities for one-night-stands, yet, in the back their mind, they're also looking for a significant other. Soon this person will attempt to turn one of these sexual encounter partners into a soul mate. Usually, these relationships go sour, because one partner is in it for the sex, while the other is looking for someone to be with. This could be avoided if the person who is looking for a soul mate refrains from casual sex, because it is counterproductive to finding a mate; but in order for this to be the case, this person's entire focus and judgment would have to be solely on building a relationship with someone. Instead it is split down the middle, with half of their mind on finding a mate, and the other half on sexual satisfaction.
The bottom line is we will not see significant results from things we don't throw 100% of ourselves into. It is impossible to give 100% of yourself to five different things, so pick a direction and go in it.
