The way he lived before his death and during his life time matters mainly. Also, you can’t assign a mark to the period of time he has been living as Christian. God knows for sure what the condition of the person's heart has been. Salvation is not a matter of believers trying to confess and repent from every sin they commit before they die. Even after a son commits mistakes against his father, he continues to be his son, though the relationship gets affected. The relationship is restored only when the son confesses his mistakes to his father and apologizes. The same way, we confess our sins to God, not to maintain our salvation, but to bring ourselves back into close fellowship with the God who loves us and has already forgiven us. We are all human and no matter how badly we want to be holy, we stumble and sin. Nevertheless, our salvation is secure. Read these verses with utmost attention. Romans 3:23 “ for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” Romans 8:1 “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” Romans 8:38-39 “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” John 6:39 “And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day” John 10:27-28 “ My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand” John 6:37-40 “All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.” Philippians 1:6 “ being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” 1 Peter 1:5 “ who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time” Romans 11:29 “ for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable” John 6:37 “All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away” Ephesians 1:13-14 “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory” Romans 8:30 "And those He predestined, He also called; those He called, He also justified; those He justified, He also glorified." From the moment God chooses us, it is as if we are glorified in His presence in heaven. Nothing can prevent a believer from one day being glorified because God has already purposed it in heaven. Once a person is justified, his salvation is guaranteed. He is as secure as if he is already glorified in heaven. John 3:15 “that everyone who believes may have eternal life” You believe in Christ today and have eternal life, but lose it tomorrow; it was never ‘eternal’ at all. Hence if you lose your salvation, the promises of eternal life in the Bible would be in error. The concept of losing one's salvation just because he was sinning at the time of death or before is flawed in so many ways. At what point would a person lose it? How many sins small or big are too much? Where would you cross the saved/unsaved line? How many do you know were not sinning in thoughts too at the time of death? Are you saying no one is going to heaven? The idea of losing our salvation is not only unscriptural, but it creates monumental problems with other doctrines, including salvation by faith, the very nature of man to sin and the purpose of Christ’s sacrifice. If this is not true, no one has ever been saved, because we all are sinful by nature. If the person is a true believer and is trying to follow Christ, yet for whatever reason (other than rebellion against God) has been indulging in some sin, God will look at the person's heart and forgive him, because such believers will always go back to God in repentance and God accepts them, forgives them and makes them holy and no longer remembers their sins! Even if a person didn’t have a chance to confess his sins at the time of his sudden death, God knows his heart and his life’s attitude towards sin, repentance and confession. We must also remember that the Bible is full of commandments and to-do lists we are asked to obey. 1 John 3:9-10 “No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God. This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are. Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother” Notice this passage does not say that we will never sin, or never stumble, but we won't live that kind of life of rebellion. If a person is living a life of sin and refusing to repent and get right with God, then he is not a Christian in the first place and this question raised does not apply here!
