"And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us." (Romans 5:5)
Those who are daily trusting in Christ for their salvation, have sure evidence that God's promise of resurrecting us to eternal life is a joyful certainty. This is the "Hope" this verse speaks of: eternal life with God and with our glorious King Jesus. Our down payment on eternal life is God's Holy Spirit within us, enabling us to love others supernaturally: With the same love God has for all His children.
Stepping out in faith and obedience to Christ by keeping the royal law of love, upon which all of the new spiritual laws rest, is a sure self-test of whether we do indeed have that Spirit within us.
Unfortunately, there are people in the world who are very difficult to love; they may even set themselves against us as an enemy. They say false things about us to others; and those others believe them—our reputation gets tainted. Maybe they ran over your dog and you think it was on purpose! One day they punch you in the nose. The Bible tells us to Love those who abuse and despitefully use us. Love your enemies.
"I'm supposed to love that person?"
"There is no possible way I could ever do that!"
That's right, we cannot. But God can! And, He enables us to love them also.
Faith and obedience gloriously work hand in hand to release the omnipotent power of God into every situation we find ourselves. I've found myself having to get gut wrenchingly honest with God, telling Him how I felt about that enemy. His law concerning loving others—even our enemies, would scroll across my memory. I had to confess that I was incapable of loving that person; but I wanted to be obedient. Finally stepping out in faith, regardless of my feelings, I treated my enemy with love. Amazingly, I've learned that the heart will follow the head.
Once I decided to treat them with love, my heart eventually came to truly love those enemies. How good it felt to be rid of all bitterness, malice and dark thoughts. The healing balm of God's forgiveness deluged my sparkling clean heart with joy and peace and sweet love. Oh awesome power of powers! And it's available to any of us? Praise God for His wisdom and power! I found the door to God's endless resources of power, and it was marked with two words: faith and obedience.
The hope we have in God's promises are more real to me today than ever before. I have clear and certain evidence that His promises are true. Our hope is not disappointed, because God pours His love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit!
Father, we thank you for your Holy Spirit and for your love. And we praise you for your unlimited power, Amen.
