"Be still and know that I am God …" (Psalms 46:10 KJV)
At seventeen years old, the night-time desert sky appeared remarkably awesome; beautiful. Staring heavenward, filled with wonder; the moon looked gigantic and the stars so bright and plentiful. They seemed closer out there, as if you could just reach up and take a handful to stow away in your pocket, for a time when light and joy are needed.
The reason for my being out in that expanse, five miles from town, was to clear my mind and talk to God. Pressures of life at that age can seem so overwhelming, and decisions monumental. School, the future, girls, church, friends, family life; they all swirled in my head, pulling me in different directions.
Then I heard the Spirit speak God’s word to my heart.
"Be still and know that I am God."
That vast mysterious sky confirmed God’s mighty power, and I could sense His presence with great intensity. A tsunami of peace washed over me that night; knowing that I could trust Him. Taking hold of His hand, God was to lead me through those frightening years of making choices that would affect the remainder of my life. He’s always been faithful, carrying me at times, giving strength, direction, purpose and unnatural peace. I’ve not always followed Jesus as I should. Whenever that peace was gone, I’d know I had veered off course. And as soon as I brought myself back in line with His will, the peace would return.
It still amazes me; the same God who made those twinkling lights in the night sky, responds to each one of His children individually, stooping to listen intently to our heart’s plea in prayer. Many times, those same words have brought the comfort and peace I needed. Be still and know that I am God. He has our situation well in hand, regardless of how things may appear to us.
God is all-powerful; all-knowing, in all places at once, and all loving; desiring a personal relationship with each of His children. It doesn't get any more awesome than that. Trusting Jesus with my life was the best decision I've ever made. After living in faith for fifty years, I can speak from experience; He is the way, the truth and the abundant life. He has continuously proven His trustworthiness to me personally. What a privilege!
Heavenly Father, thank you for leading us on the right path; for you know what will satisfy us best. It is comforting, that you see the future and will lead us to the right choices in life. May we trust you completely, and walk by faith, rather than by sight. Thank you for the peace you give. We praise you for revealing your might through the universe you’ve created. And we thank you for your sweet love that you demonstrate so clearly through your Son Jesus. In His name, amen.
