Advent is the season of singing “O Emmanuel, Come”. It is a waiting period for the birth of Jesus. The hymns sung during this season of Advent are very meaningful and encouraging. They come from the bottom of hearts waiting in anxiety and anguish. The dominant theme of those hymns is hoping and waiting for Jesus to come.
The hymn “O Emmanuel, Come”
The familiar hymn “O Emmanuel, Come” is sung during Holy Mass in the Advent season. It is based on the earlier hymn “O Antiphons” which was sung as early as the sixth century. The verses of this hymn were recited at Vespers, every day evening. This hymn reflects the longing of the people of Israel for the arrival of Messiah, which is also expressed during the season of Advent for Jesus.
O Emmanuel, Come now!
We are groping in darkness. You are the Light of the world. Only you can enlighten our darkened minds. Our hearts are crying for peace and enlightenment. We are shrouded in the darkness of selfishness. We are losing our basic moral values which have been guiding humanity so far.
O Emmanuel, Come and protect our children
While you were on this earth, you said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”(Matthew 19:14) But we are unable to protect or guide our children. You liked and loved children. But we cannot say if we like children. Because we kill them before they can see the light of this earth. Abortion has become our law. We give our children (in case they are allowed to be born) guns as toys. We enjoy with them watching movies of attacking and killing one another. We are not bothered when this gun culture of shooting one another shakes only some people in some corner of the world.
O Emmanuel, Come and protect our children. Enlighten our minds to protect children.
Come, Emmanuel, come and be with us
Your name “Emmanuel” means “Lord is with us”. But for us Christmas is a mere ritual of feasting and eating. It is not having you, Jesus, the living and loving God, in our midst. It is for us the arrival of Santa with gifts of toys. When are we going to have the real Christmas which brings you, the “Son of God, who became one among us” and is living with us?
O Emmanuel, come and make us live in Faith and Love
We are losing both faith and love in our search for money and “other things”. We believe more in “calendars” and missile weapons than we believe in you. Because our hearts are senseless and brains are numb. Come O Emmanuel, come and enlighten us.
