The Life of Joseph
by Bayo Omoyiola, Jr
(Scriptural reference: Gen 37, Gen 39, Gen 45, Gen 50, Ex 12)
Introduction:
Joseph was a special son of Jacob, grandson of Isaac and great- grandson of Abraham. He was a son of his old age and Jacob loved him more than his other sons and children (for Jacob had 12 sons and a daughter). He loved him so much that he gave him a clothe of many colours. Indeed he was a son of favour. He lived his name. The name 'Joseph' means - the LORD increases or multiplies. As his name, so was his life. He increased greatly and held leadership positions.
Time-lines:
He was born in the same year his Father, Jacob recorded his first major material breakthrough. His Father was 91 when he was born. Coincidentally, It was in the year of his birth that Laban, his maternal grandfather released his dad. His father had served Laban for 20 years.
Around that time Jacob, his father wrestled with an Angel and was blessed and was named Israel by the LORD.
After Joseph's birth, his mother, Rachel gave birth to his younger brother,Benjamin and she died shortly after delivery.
When Joseph was 17 years old, he was sold to slavery by his brothers. Jacob was 108 years old at that time. Joseph was bought by Potiphar, one of Pharaoh's office and he became a slave in his house. After a while in Portiphar's house, Joseph became the head manager of the house but was later put in prison by Portiphar when his wife lied against him. In the Prison, Joseph also increased greatly and became the head of the prisoners.
When he was 29, his dad was 120. In that year his dad and his uncle Esau buried his grandfather, Isaac. Isaac died at 180 yrs old.
When he was 30 years old (His dad was 121 then), he was released from prison and he became the prime minister of Egypt and got married to Asenath, the daughter of a priest.
At age 39 (His dad was 130) he saw his Father Jacob and was reunited with his family again after 22 years. By this time, he already had two sons (Manasseh and Ephraim). They were born to him in Egypt during the seven years of plenty.
At age 56, he lost his dad. Jacob died in Egypt at age 147.
Jacob loved Joseph and took care of him for the first 17 years of his life. As I said earlier, Joseph was a child of his old age for he was born unto Jacob at age 91. Amazingly, Joseph also paid Jacob back by taking care of the old man for the last 17 years of his life. Jacob lived with Joseph from when he was 130 years old up to the time he was 147 years old. Then he died but before he died he blessed his children. Joseph lived on until he died at the age of 110 years old.
Prophecy:
Joseph had a prophetic anointing. He had ability to interpret dreams. It was that same gift that brought him to Pharaoh because he interpreted the dreams of Pharaoh's servants when he was in the prison. He also prophesied. In Gen 50:24, he prophesied that the LORD will visit the Israelites and bring them out of Egypt.
The Exodus
Israel spent a total of 430 years in Egypt (Exodus 12:41). The first 30 years were years of enjoyment while the remaining 400 years were years of affliction (Gen 15:13). During the first 30 years, Jacob was with them for 17 years. 13 years after he died, the affliction started. I believe that the affliction must have started in the Life-time of Joseph because he was only 69 years old as at the time it started and he was very much alive. No wonder he prophesied that the LORD will surely visit them and bring them out. He witnessed the suffering of the Israelites but the suffering did not reach its peak until after the death of Joseph and his brothers. See(Exodus 1:6-7).
A new Pharaoh who had no respect for Joseph came into power and started oppressing the Israelites. He oppressed them and afflicted them. Their pain was so much that they had to call upon GOD. He heard them and anointed Moses, one of the descendants of Jacob and appointed him to lead them out of Egypt. In Exodus 12, they came out.
You are coming out:
I want to prophesy to somebody: I don't know what you are going through right now but I want to encourage you - hold on. It will pass away. You are coming out of that situation. As the Israelites came out of Egypt so would you come out of that situation. I don't care how long you have been in that situation but you are coming out. The Israelites stayed in Egypt for 430 years and suffered for 400 years but they came out. You too will come out. In Jesus name, you are coming out. In Genesis 12, they were asked by God to sprinkle blood upon the side post and door post of their house. They performed a form of passover ceremony and GOD passed over them. Beloved, thank GOD, we now we have access to the blood Of Jesus Christ. The blood of Jesus Christ would liberate you. By the blood, you are coming out in Jesus name. The time of your deliverance has come, God has heard your cry. You shall be delivered in Jesus name. If you believe, shout - amen. Glory be to GOD! Give GOD praise. Your victory is sure.
