A few weeks ago, I had the wonderful honor of being a doula to a woman giving birth to twins. Our bodies are so amazingly and intelligently designed. When we have physically given everything possible to some great task, such as birthing a child, we are spent. My husband and I have had eight children, all single births, and I can say that after such a great feat as having my body open up to present a new life into the world, there is seemingly nothing left to give. Fatigue sets in, and the body needs nourishment and rest in order to recover. I have heard it said that to give birth is the equivalent to running a marathon. To have to repeat that in the same day is almost unimaginable.
After giving birth to the first baby, my client found the strength within her to push the second baby for two long hours. She ended up needing a cesarean section, but she was fighting even to the last moment, determined to give birth to her baby in the best way possible. The anesthesiologist grew impatient and told her she wasn’t working hard enough, but that was such a lie. Interestingly enough, the anesthesiologist is the one who makes us unable to feel pain. When he was in the room speaking unkindly to her, it broke her concentration and kept her from being able to relax and let her body do what it was created to do. He kept telling the doctor she wasn’t going to make progress without an epidural. Finally, she became so discouraged she agreed to getting the epidural. Shortly after that, her contractions stopped completely, and they had to augment her labor with pitocin, a synthetic hormone that causes the uterus to contract. Pitocin can put a lot of stress on the baby, and that is exactly what happened. The baby’s heart rate started to drop significantly, and it became more and more apparent that a c-section was needed in order to save her baby’s life.
This is not an essay about natural childbirth, nor is it a criticism of all things medical. I just thought it an interesting parallel of how when we get discouraged, it becomes difficult to believe that we can do what God has created us to do. In my client’s case, she faced unbelievable odds, and it would seem that having a c-section after all that was a failure. I see that as a comparison of God rescuing us with emergency surgery when we have listened to voices of discouragement and accusation, and feel there is nothing to do but give up. In the end, she had a baby for the second time in one day, and though bombarded by the anesthesiologist’s mean spirited comments, she never gave up. She completely surrendered to the pain required for the new lives given, and was focused on nothing but the well being of her babies the whole time. After it was all over, she found the strength to care for her two newborns and her 2 year old toddler all by herself until her husband returned from a deployment to Iraq several weeks later. Amazing!
Life brings much heartache and pain. To yield to the pain is to rest in Him. Allowing the Lover of our souls to carry us through life-pangs, rather than try to stop the pain any way possible, we will find the surrender sweet, with large doses of comfort, peace, joy, strength, and intimacy with the Father every step of the way. When we spend ourselves for Jesus and His Kingdom, rather than live to protect ourselves or live for our own self indulgent pursuits, the fruit will always be new life! Or two, or three, or four….
