Eternal Security and Hope
Kara was the Sunday school superintendent of a small church. Kara suffered from Bi-Polar depression. One day deep depression set in causing her to lose hope. Kara told her father [a policeman] that she intended to take her own life, she grabbed her fathers’ gun, and ran up the stairs with her father following close behind her. Her father could not reach her in time to stop her. Kara took her own life. Kara lost all hope. The Pastor had the grizzly job of explaining the terrible details to the church. What horror to hear such a thing. I’ll never forget what the Pastor said,” Kara, bless her heart”. Kara had no hope that life could be good anymore. Depression caused her to feel hopeless. .
Hope is something we all desire. However, what about those who have lost their hope? Does God cast them aside because they took their own life? Are they lost if they were really believers? My belief is that they are not lost, in spite of the terrible act they did prior to their deaths.
What do you hope for? What causes you to feel secure? Hope and Security is something we all need, yet often do not feel we have.
The topic of eternal Security came up after Kara’s death. One man reasoned that since she murdered herself, she lost her salvation, [1 John 3:15b and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him]. However, God doesn’t see us as being in our sins after we receive Christ. That’s the key, I believe.1. Corinthians 15:17-22 if Christ be not raised from the dead, your faith is in vain, ye are yet in your sins. The key to our salvation is that Christ died, was buried and rose again the third day, he did it all, we are unable to help God with our so called good works, since that is nothing more than filthy rags in his sight-Isaiah 64:6a But we are all as an unclean thing and all our righteousness are as filthy rags.
A question was raised to see how people would respond. Do you believe that good people go to heaven and bad people go to hell? Most of those that responded by saying yes that is true. However, if that were the case, how good must one be and what is considered bad? The answer is that we must be perfect, [only Jesus was perfect, yet he became sin for us]. We cannot help God to earn our salvation.
Are believers secure in their relationship with Jesus? I believe Scripture teachers that believers are secure in Christ. Friends and family may leave or die, and often we are left feeling insecure or hopeless. Troubles come, but in Christ, we are secure.
1 John 5:13these things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God, that ye may know that ye have eternal life. If it were possible to lose our salvation, this verse could not be true, since we would never know if the next sin would cause us to lose our salvation and be lost again.
Titus 3:5- Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy, he saved us.
Romans 6:23 -The gift of God is eternal life through our LORD Jesus Christ. When we are given a gift, we simply receive it and open it, we don’t start working to pay for the gift. It is free.
Hebrews 12:2- Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith. What Jesus starts, he will finish, according to this verse.
The thief on the cross next to Jesus simply asked Jesus to remember him when he came into his kingdom. This man had no time to do good works to earn salvation if it were possible to earn it, which it is not.
2 Corinthians 5:21 -For he hath made him, who knew no sin, to be sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. God takes his righteousness and applies it to us, since he took our sins and applied them to Jesus.
Scripture is secure and our future is secure, though life is often insecure. We can still trust God. I am not advocating suicide, just presenting the fact that we can do nothing to earn or keep salvation. We are secure in Christ’s finished work on the cross. Christ is our hope of an eternity with him. Thank you Jesus !
Application: Do you know you are secure in what Christ did for you on the cross? If you believe he took your sins upon himself, you are secure, just trust him and don’t go by your feelings.
Prayer: LORD, help me to trust you, and know I am secure in you and what your word tells me.
