“Pursuing Love”
Mary B was a friend of Mom’s. Mary had a son Tim and a daughter Peggy. Peggy visited her mom regularly. Tim never spoke to his mom. Every Christmas Mary sent Tim a check, which he cashed promptly, yet he did not thank her or show any love for her, just took the money and went his own way. Years went by, Mary never heard from Tim, yet she continued loving him. Mary sent Birthday cards too, yet he did not respond, not even a thank you. Mary often related to Mom how much she loved Tim and longed to hear from him. Mary never gave up on her son. Mary loved her son until she died. Mary died in 2004.
We’ve all heard the story of the prodigal son in Luke 15:11-32. A father had two sons, The father divided what he had between his two sons. The younger son left for a far country a short time later.
In this story when the younger son wasted his money, lost it all, and realized his sins, he returned to his father, expecting only to be treated a hired servant. The father was generous though, in spite of his son’s wasteful living, he greeted his son with joy. The father ran to greet his son, he fell on his son’s neck, kissed him and even threw a party for him. The father gave his son a robe and placed a ring on his hand and shoes on his fee [ all signs of his son-ship-he was still a son, not a servant]. Another place in scripture where believers receive a robe is Revelation 6:11, here believers are in heaven after the rapture has taken place. In heaven, they receive white robes and gather for the marriage supper of the Lamb. At that time, we as believers will finally be with Christ and loved ones forever. In bible times placing a ring ones finger or hand was a sign of authority. The father never stopped loving his son. The fact that the father is pictured as running to greet his son when he saw him coming at a distance, shows the father was happy that his son returned home. God seeks after us as believers as well. 2 Chronicles 16:9 For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth to show himself strong in behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.
This father pursued his son, he continued to love his son. His love never stopped. Like Mary B, who pursued her son and kept loving and giving to him. This parable is a picture of God the father.
Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us [ If God loved us that much as sinners, he must care for us more as believers now that we are his].
John 6:44 No man can come to me except the father which sent me draw him [When we seek God it shows God has worked in our life drawing us to himself and his love and concern for us].
Romans 3:11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. [ Any time mankind seeks God, it is because God has worked in our life, and we are responding to his work in our life. We should try to remember that God took the time to send Jesus to die just for us, and therefore, he does care for us. 1 Peter 5:7 casting all our cares on him, for he careth for you.
God draws us unto himself. As believers he is ever present with us. Hebrews 13:5 For he hath said I will never leave thee nor forsake thee. Were it not for God seeking after mankind not a one of us that would that would seek after God.
Application: Question to ask yourself.
What are some ways that God has worked in your life? Remember, this shows God is seeking us.
Fact: We probably won’t realize fully how much God worked in our lives until we arrive in heaven. But studying scripture can help us remember that God pursued us before we were saved and pursues us after salvation as well.
It’s easy to get held up with everyday life and its troubles and forget that God is with us and seeks after us. Sometimes in life, with so little love in the world and troubles on every hand, it is hard to believe that God cares about us, but he does.
Prayer: Lord I sometimes get so caught up with life’s sorrows, I feel you do not care about me. I tend to go by feelings and circumstances, rather than the facts of scripture and all you have done for me in the past and present. Help me remember that you sought me before I believed in you, and still do, no matter how I feel. Help to remember scriptural facts instead of feelings. Help me to look at all the ways you work in my life daily. Then I will thank and praise you.
