Devotionals
We've all experienced the grace that leads to salvation. There are other times when we need grace.
If it wasn't for grace, who knows where we would be? Sometimes we tend to end up in places where God doesn't want us. One day, we are close to God and the next, we don't know how we got so far away.
We can find several lessons about grace in Luke fifteen.
First, the parable of the lost sheep. In Bible times, shepherds had to be persistant in looking for lost sheep. They had to keep looking until the lost sheep were found. Shepherds then carried sheep back to the fold on their shoulders. Sheep are a strange creature as
they can easily end up in a pickle without a shepherd. Look up and realize they are alone.
The same is true of us. Without the grace of God, we can end up in a pickle. Jesus has to come looking for us and carry us back on his shoulders.
Second, the parable of the lost coin. Jesus taught in this parable about the importance
of looking for a lost coin. How many of us have lost something and went nuts until we we knew where it was? We were obsessed. Similarily, Christ is obsessed with us. When we are lost, He doesn't give up until he finds us. Actually, I think He knows exactly where we are. He's waiting for us to find Him. In a strange twist of fate, Christ is the lost coin.
Finally, the parable of the prodigal son. In Bible times, associating with a pig was considered an unhealthy act to say the least. Jews considered pigs to be unclean. At some point, this son must have wandered how he ended up sleeping with pigs. At the end, his father not only was watching for him however, restored him to his place in the family. Christ does the same with us. He watches for us and when He see's us, restores us to our place in the family.
When we are far away from God, it probably doesn't matter how we got there. If it did, We could pinpoint exactly when and how. We've a choice to make: Pick ourselves up out of the pig pen and be restored or stay living without a shepherd ending up someone's dinner. There is an enemy seeking out people to devour. Close to Jesus is the only protection.

This reminds me of the look Jesus gave Peter after he denied the Lord three times, the look of love, forgiveness, and restoration.
