Wow... I AM surprised, especially since many of you commented that I did hit the "oh factor," when I was so sure I had missed it.
(But again, it seems to be the way of it... entries I've written that I don't care for, in terms of "skill" or "topic appropriateness," often place, while those that I think are brilliant and spot-on don't.)
Thank you, everyone. In spite of being at FW for a long while... in spite of placing... I am still much too thin-skinned.
If anyone is interested, I got the inspiration for the story and the last line (which is the real "ohhhh....") from these photos.
Cornish Tin Mines
And apologies that I didn't make it clearer in the story that it was a tin mine. In the long run, I guess it doesn't matter... even though I'm not sure coal mines have these distinctive engine house chimneys.
(Is this too much yakking for the results thread?)
Congratulations to everyone... It is definitely an honour to be counted with you.

Another week of great stories--congrats to all the winners. It's neat how new names are becoming familiar.
A special shout-out to Chel and Stan.
And Rachel, I'm sorry to not see your story up there.

Wow, Judges. Thank you. I am truly flabbergasted and honored to be up there with so many established pros like Lisa, Ann, Marita, Emily and Beth, as well as so many of FaithWriter's latest up and comers.
I came very close to not even submitting this story because I was afraid it might have too much "female imagery".
I am really, really glad I did.
Thanks to everyone who popped by and left a comment; those yellow box notifications are always the highlight of my inbox.

Congrats to so many amazing writers! Chely - too awesome! Loved it so much.
Lisa, thanks for the sentiment (at least, I assume you meant that for me - if not... well, that was awkward). I was hoping to place with this one, it's true, but I am very happy to be happy writing again. Writing my story was enough of a prize for me.
Can't wait to go read the ones I didn't get to yet!
