Wk 7 Topic - SKELETON IN THE CLOSET

Postby Deb Porter » Thu Nov 30, 2017 5:49 pm

Welcome back, Challengeers. I hope you enjoyed your week off.

I can hear some rattling going on as all those things we don’t want revealed come out into the open in the Week 7 topic:

SKELETON IN THE CLOSET
http://www.faithwriters.com/writing-challenge-intro.php

You could write about a bunch of bones in a cupboard if you want, but of course, the true meaning of the saying is not quite so literal. Most families (and individuals) have the odd skeleton hidden in their closet. It’s a reasonably old saying and it basically means a secret source of shame that a person or family attempts to keep from being revealed.

SKELETON IN THE CLOSET
http://www.idiomreference.com/define/sk ... the-closet

These “skeletons” are often not quite as embarrassing as the closet-keepers may think. For example, in many years past, an Australian family may have tried to hide the fact that an ancestor was a convict. For other families, it may have been a family member of a different race. Or perhaps an illegitimate birth. These days, those things are not generally hidden away. However, there are still things that individuals and families prefer others not to know about their past. What skeletons will you rattle this week?

As always, you can write in any genre or style, and you can do with the topic whatever your heart desires. The important thing is to make sure the topic (SKELETON IN THE CLOSET) is the CENTRAL focus of your entry.

Also, make sure your entry conforms to the rules.

Don't forget to check your word count before submitting (entries must be between 150 and 750 words). A very reliable and free online word count check tool is this one:

http://www.wordcountertool.com/

PLEASE, always hit the preview button to check your entry before hitting the final submit button. This is the only way to make sure your entry is uploaded correctly. This is very important, particularly if you are using HTML code for the first time. Once you have previewed your entry, close the preview page and hit the submit button.

Finally, once submitted, do a check to make sure your entry is safely in the list:

So come on, Challengeers. Let’s get those old bones rattling with some wonderful Challenge entries this week.

Love, Deb

Skeleton in the closet? Seriously? I'm like a kid in the candy store here! :D
Or at least back in the old days I would have been. Back when I used to write some pretty dark-scary-intense entries. But I'm rehabilitated now, right?

So.... this "skeleton in the closet" can be something that's a bit embarrassing, but not necessarily serious, or potentially controversial, right? Say a silly phobia, the fact that you fell up stairs on a regular basis, or something along those lines, right?

I thought I was the only one who fell upstairs on a regular basis!

Maxx ... yes, it would have been the perfect gift to you at your edgiest.

Allison, that's fine. It's something you want to keep a secret, for whatever reason. Make it obvious that it's a skeleton in the closet, and you'll be fine.

Great topic to finish the year!
I just managed to get my entry in, I think.

The problem is, the submission feedback said that it was entered at level 1 instead of level 4.
I was sure I chose level 4 from the list.
Oh well. Swallow your pride and start at the bottom again, David!
Dave B. (aka Arthur D Bardswell)

Take a look at Arthur D Bardswell's latest novel:
"Wings in the Wind: The Reign of the Mawh'eyri"

Any reviews would be fantastic! It makes you eligible for a FREE Download of the sequel: "Wing in the Wind: Seasons of the Sun Spirit." when available.

No worries, David. I can fix that for you ... just checked and someone must have already fixed it for you. You're in Level 4.

(Always click out of the level select box before scrolling down or up. That can be the reason the level shifts.)
