 Hi Friends, I am mostly a lurker/reader, and not a post-er, but couldn't resist this time. When I first joined FW, I made a couple of comments on one of Jan's great lessons. I said I was a beginner, an aspiring writer, and a retired grandmother ; and that my goal was to disprove the adage,&quo...

Writing on topic
Morning, Jan, Having the criteria as a series of lessons is a great idea. Thanks for thinking of it. As for topic ideas, I also google sometimes, or even go to the dictionary or thesaurus before beginning. It just gets my mind going in the right direction. However, it can also overload my brain (not...

Hyphens
Oh yes! I especially liked "the old sewing machine collector." Most helpful, maybe to me is #8, about the "coined" or "occasional" compound. Like Green Leaves, I hope to remember this, :heehee but will remember your advice to use a dictionary. Thanks Ann,

Creating More Interesting Characters
Recalling this, I also thought of Anna and hundreds like her who took all things in stride, even the wind and weather, and went about the business of life with hard work and positive attitudes. They seemed at peace with their God and their surroundings. At your suggestion, this is from an old chall...

Yes, Ann, thanks. I discovered the two hyphen dash thing in writing challenge articles, and just forgot. It works on my Word program, but not on the forum board, I believe. Also good to be reminded, because it's easy for me to confuse hyphens and dashes, thus I left spaces. Thanks again.

Hi Ann, Here goes: I will label them correct or incorrect, according to my understanding , which may be in question. The angry mob came nearer - not a familiar face among them - as Ed backed inside and latched the door. (Correct) Benson - leader of the uprising - and his friends, Jake, Slim, a...

I am literally bowled over with this mini-lesson. In fact, I might just drowned myself, I thought to myself . :helpwobble Thanks for all these, Jan. Guess it seemed so easy to comment that I couldn't help it. :sorry They are all too familiar to me. Your lessons are great, but I don't usually try to ...

:music2 Congratulations to all! Haven't been writing this quarter at all, because of some stuff happening, and because I can't seem to capture these particular topics in my writing imagination. :? :? :? However, I've been reading a lot of the good entries, :book2 and hope to be back in the swing soo...

:grouphug I so relate to this. I blame part of it on the world's push to succeed, excel, win, make it to the top, etc. When I learned that my worth to God has very little to do with this, it helped me tremendously. :angel2 Still, like all of you have expressed, there is something in me that gets waa...

:grouphug Congratulations to all. First week I've not entered in some time. Strange too, because we are retired, and nothing would come to my mind that hasn't already been said - good :P and bad  - about retirement. Like they say, maybe, can't see the forest for the trees. Anyway, love reading ...

:thankssign Jan, I have just now got around to reading your helps on titles. Thanks so much. It is very helpful, but makes me know how many times I've flunked out on title alone. I had a title idea for this next time which is actually a quote in my story, and it looks sort of dumb without quotation ...
