Re: It's or Its

The same problem arises with theirs (that blue car, which is theirs, is parked behind mine) and there's (there's that blue car, blocking me in again!). I guess in both cases the confusion is logical - 's is the possessive in most cases, but not here. Gotta love the English language and its idiosyncr...

Re: Which and That?

Thanks, Ann!

I will certainly be putting this into practice as I draft this week's challenge effort. Thanks for the pointer about eliminating unnecessary 'thats'. I am forever adding them and then wondering how my word count has got so close to the limit.

Re: Let's Go!

I'm in, and thanks so much for doing this. I agree with Jan that grammar is hard!

One idea for a lesson - which and that, and the differences between them.

Re: Misplaced Apostrophes

As a proofreader and editor, I see this all the time. The rule of thumb I give is 'think O'. Apostrophes should be used for omission (o'clock, haven't etc), and ownership or possessive, (Daisy's hat, the dog's ball). But I see it used in plurals, verbs and all sorts, yep - I've even seen sort's. It ...

Re: Winners FANTASY/SCI-FI GENRE Challenge

What is so beautiful is how supportive people are both in terms if encouraging each other and helping each other to grow. I have been helped by every single comment on my work, be it encouraging me to keep writing or pointing out something I could do better. Thank you for this amazing place. :thanks...

Re: Be a Better Writer -- SCIENCE FICTION

Thanks, Deb. That clarifies things. :thankssign

Now back to the drawing board... :D :D

One thing is for sure, unless life really conspires otherwise, I WILL be having a go this week, in order to make sure I don't get into the mindset of 'I can't do this'.

Re: Be a Better Writer -- SCIENCE FICTION

Where I'm really coming undone is the boundary between fiction and sci fi/fantasy, or put another way, being on or off topic :? There seem to be an awful lot if grey areas. Take a dream about Heaven, for example. Perfectly possible to dream about Heaven, but yet Heaven itself is a place where things...

Re: Be a Better Writer -- SCIENCE FICTION

I am struggling quite a bit with this genre, especially in where the boundaries lie between sci fi (also fantasy) and general fiction - what would be classified as sci fi/fantasy and what wouldn't, and why. :?

Re: Be a Better Writer -- SCIENCE FICTION

http://www.faithwriters.com/wc-article-level1-previous.php?id=49179 I didn;t actually think of this piece as science-fiction until this morning. It is a bit of a 'what if' type piece. I freely admit, I was dreading this genre! But I guess nothing makes a genre look less scary than realising you've a...

Re: Be a Better Writer--FREE VERSE

http://www.faithwriters.com/wc-article-level2-previous.php?id=49524 I've pasted the link for the autobiography challenge. I didn't start off intending to write free verse. Poetry is definitely not my natural strength but, for this piece, I could not make it work in prose - poetry was what this piece...

Re: Be a Better Writer--HUMOR WRITING

Hi, I'm posting the link to my first entry which was in the pros and cons week. It was written as a diary, based on what I guess I would be like if I didn't really keep a firm check on myself. I didn't really know much about the challenge and what was expected. What I found hardest was getting the m...
