Re: Be a Better Writer--CHARACTERIZATION
I can’t say enough about the importance of characterization. Until quite recently, characterization had been one of my weak points. I wrote mostly about places, things, and events. This was enough for me to move up to Advanced, but until I started breathing some life into my characters, I couldn’t m...

http://www.faithwriters.com/wc-article-level1-previous.php?id=49307 This one was about my dog and cat. There's a fair bit in here about their various traits. Kat, thanks for posting the link to "Entente Cordiale." This was one of your early entries, and I guess I must have missed it. I lo...

Re: Be a Better Writer -- GENDER NEUTRAL LANGUAGE
Perhaps you can help me out a bit with this. I'm not sure that I'm seeing where the hypocrisy is. By your own statement, using only the masculine form implies that masculine is better, and using a woman's title to indicate her marital status implies that marriage is superior to not-marriage. Gender...

Re: Be a Better Writer -- GENDER NEUTRAL LANGUAGE
Jan, thanks for a great lesson. Steve, your posts are most informative. I know this thread pertains mainly to nonfiction. But even in fiction, issues might arise. Would some readers, and possibly some publishers, expect that 21st century gender-neutral language be used in retro fiction? In the 1930s...

Re: Be a Better Writer -- GENDER NEUTRAL LANGUAGE
Thanks, Jan.
The only union with which I am familiar is the Massachusetts State College faculty union, which uses the titles president, vice president, etc. But I realize that other types of employee unions might be different.

Re: Be a Better Writer -- GENDER NEUTRAL LANGUAGE
I rewrote the sentences without first looking at Zac's answers and Jan's corrections. But my answers don't differ greatly from his. 1. to boldly go where no man has gone before To boldly go where none have gone before. 2. A two-year-old usually clings to his mother in unfamiliar places. Two-year-old...

Re: Be A Better Writer -- BIOGRAPHY
Just two final questions:
1) Can a biography have any dialogue? Or is it best to rewrite any dialogue I intended to use, as narrative?
2) Does the material need to be footnoted within the body of the entry. Or is it okay to just list the sources in the author's notes?
Many thanks.

Re: Be A Better Writer -- BIOGRAPHY
Jan and Deb, I am following this thread very carefully, as well as Deb's on the same subject. I am trying to identify just the right tone in which to write. What confuses me is that it sounds as if the biography should contain more telling (as opposed to showing) than what I am used to in the Challe...

Re: Be A Better Writer -- BIOGRAPHY
Jan, I posted my questions on Deb's thread. Assuming that Deb also says no, then I will write in the third person narrative as she states on her thread. I am not 100% certain that I understand what is meant by third person narrative. Does it mean that the entry can be written from the POV of the sub...

Re: Be A Better Writer -- BIOGRAPHY
Is it okay to write about the life of a famous person from the POV of a friend, servant, or other associate? Which brings me to my second question: Certainly a biography shouldn't misrepresent the character of the subject, nor attribute to them achievements that weren't theirs. But would it be okay ...

Re: Be a Better Writer -- INSPIRATIONAL WRITING
I know this should be a non-fiction entry. Is it all right to change names of people and specific places?
