Re: Setting the Scene Correctly

Thanks Jan. I try to make the setting apparent from the get go. I appreciate your advice on how to be subtle. Jo, I haven't clicked on your link yet, but I think I can guess which story your linked too. The misdirection was key in that one.

Re: Be a Better Writer--AVOIDING ETHNIC STEREOTYPES

if you can think of an alternative, why not? How about this: "Little Cathy had never seen anyone as dark as the girl on the swing. Her skin was beautiful - almost the black of newly tilled Iowa soil." (From a memory. My dad thought was funny that I was making friends with her at the park ...

Re: Be a Better Writer--AVOIDING ETHNIC STEREOTYPES

I had NO idea that comparing skin color to food could be offensive. The linked buzzfeed article was hilarious! I especially like the "mayonnaise legs". As a white person, with olive skin that turns caramel then latte in the summer sun, I don't have a peaches & cream complexion. However...

Yes to those too. I wanted to say cliche's but was scared of the homework.  I struggle with them still. (not using them that is. Old habits die hard, you know.)

Re: A week off, and a question

Hi Jan! I wonder if you have any insights or advice to share about self-publishing and how to find/work with an editor. I am blessed to be working with a fantastic editor who knows I'm inexperienced, but I'm still pretty clueless on the next step. (or even if I started on the right step). Also, I le...

Re: For Picture Book Writers

I'll check this out for sure. I started a picture book a few years ago, and worked on it for months. I revisited it off and on trying to finish it and finally forgot about it (for the most part). I'd like to see if I can actually write one. It's a genre I haven't "mastered" yet, and I'm te...

Re: Be a Better Writer--Formatting Poetry

Jo, I've always wondered why you don't write more poetry. You do it well! Here is a link to one of my free verse challenge entries. What Good Trying (in hindsight) to analyze my "conventions"..... I used lower case letters throughout except, and purposely, when referring to God or His Word...

In addition to putting the mind talking in italics, I presume when thoughts shift to different ideas that creating a new paragraph would be appropriate. Is this correct? Hi Judy - ...

Re: Be a Better Writer--CONFLICT

You're absolutely right that Scarlett vs. herself is a huge part of the novel. But there's also Scarlett vs. Rhett, and Scarlett vs. nature (when her family nearly starves), and Scarlett vs. Ashley (unrequited love) and some larger societal issues (the old South) and probably dozens more. I thought...

Re: Be a Better Writer--CONFLICT

I'm looking forward to this series, Jan. I know I need more help in this area. I chose "Gone With the Wind" off the top of my head, and have been thinking for 5 minutes about what the main conflict is. It might seem to be the Civil War, but I came to the conclusion (correct me if I'm wrong...

Re: Be a Better Writer--CAPITALIZING PRONOUNS FOR GOD

Just to be clear, capitalization has nothing to do with respect . It distinguishes proper nouns from common nouns. It's a matter of writing mechanics in English, nothing more. I don't necessarily think of it as a matter of respect, but more reverence. Awe. Worship maybe? It's recognizing his divini...

Re: Be a Better Writer--CAPITALIZING PRONOUNS FOR GOD

This really makes me uncomfortable. I guess that makes me an "older" Christian. I read the NIV version of the Bible for the most part, and I don't like that He, His, Him, etc. aren't capitalized. There have been a few passages I've had to take to my pastor to discern whether a certain &quo...

Re: Be a Better Writer--NONFICTION AND RESEARCH

Great lesson! I write a lot of non-fiction, and this is all very helpful. Thank you, Vonnie, for your post also - excellent advice! I tend to remember what I read too well, also, especially if I take copious notes. I'm still confused about plagiarism of of IDEAS. That seems very broad. Can you defin...
