Oh, ha ha ha Holly--I actually figured that someone would try the spelling "it" trick.

Well, you've only got one week to wait for "personification"--start collecting examples!

I definitely think it is Betsy. Even though it doesn't follow a typical single plot line, it has almost all of the elements of a story. And it's very, VERY good! Thanks for the link!

Catrina, I really hope to read your narrative poem soon!

The link was fine...thanks for finding that one. It was one that I was thinking of earlier, but I was too lazy to go find it.

You're gonna love the ominapoptential stuff.

Beth, I should have asked you to "guest teach" this lesson! A question for you--why would you sometimes choose to use narrative poetry rather than prose? "The Ballad of George Smiley" is a good example--it'd make a superb short story. What is it that poetry brings to the story th...

Jan's Master Class--NARRATIVE POETRY

Here’s another week for the poets—you prose writers come back next week, okay? For now, I’ll be talking about narrative poetry—that is, poetry that tells a story. A closely related term is ballad, which is a narrative poem that is meant to be sung. Narrative poems and ballads have played an importan...

WOW!!!!!! We've been gone for 3 days, taking a small vacation with our daughters and sons-in-law. What a wonderful, wonderful surprise greeted me when I came in the door! It was my cat, Sophie, giving me kitty kisses....and THEN I checked my e-mail! WOW OH WOW! Thanks, friends, for all of the lovely...

Cori, I'll have to check those out! I remember Christian Bale from one of his earliest roles--in a Disney musical called "Newsies" where he played a turn-of-the-century newsboy embroiled in a labor uprising. Sounds weird, I know--but it was a great movie! My girls and I used to watch it al...

I remember that one! Hilarious, and a bit of genius on the part of the writers.

Joanne, I think you did it exactly right with Akiva's Assignment. Arranging the sequence of events they way you did enabled you to start with a great hook, and it wasn't in the least bit confusing. Thanks for reminding us of this extremely creative story!

Tom, I've never seen "Big Fish", but this is the 2nd time in a week that I've had it highly recommended. Guess I'll have to check it out!

I didn't know you write scripts--did I? Oh wait, I remember a Genesis one...I take that back.

Biblical climaxes: The transfiguration God throwing Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden The parting of the Red sea When the walls of Jericho came tumbling down The ultimate Climax Jesus arriving on a white steed at the end of the Tribulation These are great!! I've got to admit that the word &quo...

Jodie, I just have to add, from The Two Towers, Sam's fight with Shelob. Of course, Sam's whole adventure there at the tower of Cirith Ungol was rivetting, too, though I think that was the beginning of The Return of the King. We may have lost our instructor, though, as I seem to recall her admissio...

Here I come.... Tlot-tlot, tlot-tlot! From "The Highwayman".... Her eyes grew wide for a moment! she drew one last deep breath, Then her finger moved in the moonlight, Her musket shattered the moonlight, Shattered her breast in the moonlight and warned him -- with her death. I knew I hear...

Here's one of mine that had an explosive climax. http://www.faithwriters.com/wc-article-level3-previous.php?id=21452 I would say the actual climax it when the one advisor says "is lit." The next line is actually a very rapid resolution. Yowsers, Gerald, an explosive climax? That's an unde...

I liked your entry's "climax" this week, Jan, but in light of reading this, I wonder if the falling action was your MC's internal dialogue and your resolution was your ending, which was in a way a cliff hanger. Would you have considered your story this week to end in climax, or were you p...
