Both, Jodie--anthropomorphism is a tool used by many allegorists.

Jodie, it's hard for me too--but hey, I'm an equal opportunity teacher, and it came up on the list. Besides, even if you're never going to use a literary device, it's nice to be able to throw the terms around, and to recognize them when you see them.
