Re: Jan's Writing Basics #9--Writing on Topic

 AS USUAL I'm on the runway flying backwards... Personally, I would not have survived if not for many of those what is being termed "predictable," - sappy happy endings. I had served as a missionary for decades until I finally could not experience any more further tragedy, hardship o...

I can't seem to drag myself out of the hole and I think if I even went back to Beginners I'd bomb! :helpwobble Im ready to throw in the keyboard but rethinking it since yo...

Hey Jan! Well, I too will skitter on over to the grammar lessons! I really want to know more about the appropriate use or inappropriate use on these phrases. Guilty! Guilty! One of the predictables I actually love is the single girl and single man starting off as "enemies" of some nature. ...

Thanks, Jan for being here! I felt a need for a lesson this week since I "bombed" last week..... Homework #1 Every day Barbel slathered cream cheese on a blueberry bagel precisely at 8:00 a.m. However, breakfast this morning warranted far more than everyday fare. Homework # Clint slowed fo...

Wow, that's really good advice! Why didn't I think of that? I never thought to peruse the writing of certain others. I must say I have received some good comments from those I admire and recognize right off the bat, so it would probably be prudent to comfort myself in that fact. Yes, this ma...

I say, bless you to Pam! I've been in that boat and the negative comments my piece received were not constructive; one in fact was just down right mean! Those comments had nothing to do with the "craft" they just "didn't get it." I'm sad when that happens because I a...

Hey, Jan. I hunker around in the corners because I'm not in Intermediate or Beginners but can get more out of one of these lessons then I did an entire semester of Creative Writing in college! Can't remember what I learned there, but every day now I'm like checking for "salsa" words and tr...

 HAHA! I liked the "wrench" your hands off. When I moved to California I had mid-west and oklahoma-planted-in Colorado parental collequisms to translate (in a hurry.) I had to discover that nobody "worshes" their clothes, they do laundry. "Pop" is not something to ...

Okay, now I feel better. I wasn't getting it when they didn't add to characterization, etc. but that makes sense, they move the story along, even a little. I really like that technique used in all the ways you describe.
Thanks!

I'm actually wondering not about the placement of dialogue, but the content of what you place with it when its truly insignificant. I've noticed it alot lately -seemingly insignificant action in - a very short sentence in with the dialogue. "I thought I answered your question." Adelaide re...
