Hi Ann. I did the Tackle it Tuesday thingy on the FW Blog.. you know the story in 50 words or less. Tell me, how does it look to you. I had to cut off 300 words to get to meet the maximum word count allowed. The course, brutal, flags sway, wind roaring. Dip, turn, skipping over the powdery surface....

Commas (Part Four)

Commas - Part Four I said in another thread that if you say something before you get the main point of your sentence, add a comma. In other words, if you build a sentence backwards, add a comma. In technical talk, use a comma after an introductory adverbial clause, verbal phrase, or absolute phrase...

Wow... I AM surprised, especially since many of you commented that I did hit the "oh factor," when I was so sure I had missed it. (But again, it seems to be the way of it... entries I've written that I don't care for, in terms of "skill" or "topic appropriateness," ofte...

By the way, I won't be teaching the punctuation or mechanics of dialog. If you're not sure about those, check online or study published examples.
I'll be covering this, so stayed posted. Several people have requested it, and it's on my list.

Re: Jan's writing basics #5--Topic TBA

What did you say? Wahlah? Walla? Waa laa? Nope, nor any similar variation. What you said was " Voila !" Thank you... from a Canadian... who, although she doesn't speak French as fluently as the promoters of national bilingualism would have hoped, still recognizes when the language is bein...

One of my favorite things, is doing the laundry. It's relaxing to me, and nothing makes me happier than me hanging cloths in the sunshine. My neighbor, whose husband is a truck driver, says she doesn't have time, so she dries hers in a dryer. I love the way ours smells so fresh, not perfumed like t...

Okay, here is my try at this: One of my favorite things is doing the laundry. It's relaxing to me, and nothing makes me happier than hanging clothes in the sunshine. My neighbor, whose husband is a truck driver, says she doesn't have time, so she dries hers in a dryer. I love the way ours smell so ...

Gerunds.... briefly... simply... painlessly... I hope...

I apologize for dumping gerunds on you all. I got a little carried away with the lesson, and using possessives + gerunds seemed relative. At the time. So here are some simple explanations. I wish I could make a flow chart to show how the same word is performing several functions at the same time, bu...

Thanks, I really feel like I am absorbing so much. If you don't hear from me, it is because for some reason, I didn't receive the information that there was a NEW post. I don't know why that happens some times. But I WANT to be a part of it ALL. Carol Penhorwood Thank you, Carol, for coming and wan...

Personally, I found the gerunds and possessive part of your lesson difficult. I admit I have been out of school a very long time.... Please don't stress about these things. It's more important to discover "patterns"... and soon it will be natural. You'll hear it. I'm running out the door....

A break from commas

I’ll come back to commas next week, but for today, I want to talk about possessives and pronouns. Jan has already talked about it’s and its , so I’ll cover the other bugaboos in the same category. I see these errors every single day... it’s a HUGE area of misunderstanding and misuse. The Possessive ...
