Re: Having a point #1--6th judging criterion
Thanks for your quick response! I was actually thinking about the second part of the sixth judging criteria. "Was the entry clearly written and communicated? " That's at least what my ratings feedback told me was a problem (clarity). Here's an example of my mistakes if you have time http:/...

Re: Having a point #1--6th judging criterion
Hi Jan, I'm not sure if you are still responding to these threads, but I thought I'd try. This is an area that I've placed poorly on twice, and had one story that placed well, but still left one reader confused. How does one leave enough clues without spelling it all out? I want to have that sense o...

Re: Smashing Writer's Block
I think I definitely have struggled with writer's block, but I think that block was shaped like four kids and a full time job. I still have both kids and job, but I've been finding time anyway over the last year and I'm living it. A funny piece of advice my daughter told me about today. If you have ...

Italics in third person
Hi Jan,
I think I know to the answer to this, but I wanted to check. When writing third person limited, should the character's thoughts be italicized?
Thanks in advance,
Rachel

Re: Some Questions for You
I have benefited greatly from your writing lessons, Jan. I'm not super active on the forums, or even Faithwriters in general, but my hope and dream is to write more. You are helping me to do that. When I had a story idea, but not a theme, I went to your lessons and used the one about man vs, himself...

Great, thanks! (I figured out a different angle to the challenge this week so it's easier to wait. )

'I don't know if it's too late to post here, but I was wondering if you have done or will do a lesson on flashbacks? I'd like to more about how they should be written and if they are appropriate for short stories.

Re: Head Hopping
I started out just wanting to say thank you for the lesson, but I went back through my some of my challenge entries to see if I do you this "head-hopping" and I couldn't find a place where I did. What I did find out is how little I reference what the characters think, at least in the 6 or ...

Re: Be a Better Writer--DEALING WITH NEGATIVE CRITIQUE
I've just been reading through this lesson. Maybe it's just another manic Monday, but I needed this today. I do want to improve my writing and I need help to do that. I knew my challenge entry this week was really hard for me to get it right so I do need to see how it "sounds outside my head.&q...

Re: Beginnings (#1)--the 4th judging criterion
Aww..... Thanks. I am considering that line for a story, but it's still in the "waiting on God to show me what He wants to do with it phase."
I'm going to have see if I can find alliteration in some of the prose I study with my students....just to see if it's been done.

Re: Beginnings (#1)--the 4th judging criterion
I like it--it definitely would make me want to read on. I do think that it might have too many 's' sounds--you don't usually see that kind of alliteration in prose. Maybe a synonym for 'seeped' or 'special' would take care of that. So maybe this? Shame permeated every tender memory she considered. ...
